FBA talk to me about the Zumo 660

Steve, I saw you posted somewhere about a Zumo 660. I have seen the specs, but I am interested in the mounting system. Is it as good as the 550? The bad part is I was at CES and even went into the Garmin booth and didn't see it. Crap.

The zumo 550 has a very very good cradle for the motorcycle. If the cradle on the 660 isn't as good I won't consider it.

Forget the 550. The 660 is 3/4" thick, has the latest technology and is a 4.3 " super bright widescreen unit. The only thing is that you lose the hard buttons on the left, something we will have to live without. I have them coming in 2 weeks and will give you all my impressions of the unit. Today, it's cheaper than the 550. I bet there are a host of new features on this unit, not to mention the A2DP Bluetooth...and longer battery life with a east to change battery by way of a slip off cover. Hard resets are a breeze on that device, should there be the need, as there often was on the 550.

I bet the cradle will be even more robust on the 660, but until I have one in my hands, won't be able to tell you more.

Send me a PM Ted...I'll let you know what I can. I have a boatload on order - LOL.

The 550 was laden with bugs that will never get resolved...the 660 is based on the Nuvi 550 chasis, which is a wild unit and literally fits in your chest pocket! I have played extensively with the Nuvi 550 and the new UI is really much better and faster. The 660 will have a faster processor, lane guidance, junction view 3D view etc...bells and whistles, but you can bet it will be a leap ahead of the 550. It's also a powered cradle, like the Zumo 550. The day I get them, I'll post up here. Cradles are going to get installed on all my bikes for the 660. There will be F/W issues on the 1st release, no doubt, but that's a no-brainer and will be addressed quickly. How are ya loving that 09 now?

Steve the PMs aren't working. I read about the 660 and the only thing I could find that it didn't have that the 550 does is have an XM input, which I don't use anyway. I want stereo bluetooth. I trust your judgment about the cradle. I am waiting eagerly for your assessment.

Ya, I forgot about that Ted..in any case, my thoughts will be up here the second they hit my docks...along with detailed pics of the unit, features, screens and mounts. Garmin tells us they're shipping 4/17, so I should see them 4/23.

i know this is not a motorcycle specific gps but i tell you one thing, the free traffic updates for life are a great feature. i was heading for daytona and it steered me around a major truck accident (with traffic backup for hours) in real time while my buddy's gps without the update steered him straight into the backup. don't know if the zumo has traffic update but the nuvi has all the bluetooth bells and whistles as well.

You can add any traffic receiver to the Zumo 660, except for XM, which was available on the Zumo 550. The thing about the Zumo's, is that they're waterproof, made for bikes with all the bells and whistles, as well as the motorcycle friendly features that make it more useful for riders than the Nuvi's. I do know a lot of folk that use Nuvi's for their bikes, due to cost, and that's fine as well. I just prefer the Zumo for my bikes.

I absolutely love my Zumo 550 (Steve talked me into it) I just want stereo bluetooth so a 660 is probably in my future. What I really like is the thing comes with 2 mounts, one for the bike and one for the car. The thing just works. The good thing about the motorcycle mount is that all connections go to the mount which allows you to remove the unit by just lifting the lever. The unit knows when it is in the mount and it works accordingly.

Just went to the Zumo forums and here is the mount.

I guess there is no locking screw like the 550.
Other than that, this is looking good.

Guys, soon as they come in the door - I'll post up in full. From what I know about Garmin, it will have some software issues on the initial release, but will get sorted out quickly after that for the most part. I'm getting my C ready for that install now...

I did play with a 1260T the other day - a production sample. Man that thing's fast - fastest one I've ever seen from Garmin yet! I'm betting that the 660 will be a complete new deal over the 550.
