Riding fast with ABS

Well today I took a 350 mile ride on the new 09. I went from Reno to Jackson CA and back up 49 to Auburn. 49 is clean because it is below the snow level and I was able to dial it up a bit, Each and every corner that requires hard braking the rear ABS kicks in and now that I have had more than a few corners to fool with it, I am able to make a few comments. First of all once you get used to it, the thing kicking in is not too dramatic, but it is a bit annoying. Because you really aren't getting the braking action you want, it kicks in and then kicks out making it hard to modulate the rear brake properly. Then I noticed that if you touch the front brake first it doesn't kick in near as much. Which means that the code is looking for the front brake and thinking it is unloading the rear and makes it not kick in so easily. So the cure may be to just hook up the rear brake switch in parallel with the front and it will think the front is on.

Ted,
I went through the abs wiring diagram, the switches are already both linked. The abs sould work off the speed sensors. The wires are r/bk and bk/r.

That means the algorithm is looking to see if the brake is already on for X amount of time before desensitizing the rear. I may have to just get used to it or come up with some other means.

No but I may valve it down a bit in the rear. I have to think about it and ride it more and see if I can just get used to it.

Hey Ted, IF you want to verify that the ABS system is or isn't seeing the front brake (well electricaly speeking), just install a switch (and maybe a diode) into the front brakes electrical circuit. That way you could flip the switch and the system (electrical) would be thinking that you have just actuated the front brake leaver. At least you could determine if the ABS system is or isn't looking at the circuit.

Just a thought.

Well now that I know what to look for I should ne able to experiment with just pulling the front lever enough to activate the switch.

Hey Ted, I know from your previous posts that you use your rear brake a lot. I hardly ever use it when rippin and the front never activates. The only time mine activates, front or rear is when it's wet or really hard dry braking, the rear naturally easier than the front. I think you just use more rear brake than the average guy they designed it for. Or, it's a big ass bike with ABS, quit tryin to back it in!

I steer with the back wheel, flat trackers do that I use the rear brake before the front, in mid turn, and to control wheel spin exiting, I just use it a lot. I am hoping I can get used to it. I want to see what happens when I put PR2s on and go from that.
