Givi Maxia on Concours14
Just finished mounting a Givi Maxia (the big 52 liter top case) onto my Connie. When I was surfing web reviews, I didn't see any photos of this setup, so I thought perhaps I should post some. Maybe someone else is contemplating the same arrangement and wondering how it looks.
My thoughts on the installation and the results:
1) it took a whole Saturday afternoon. I got the brake light kit, so that adds a bit to the installation effort.
2) the brake light kit requires you to tap into the Concours brake wiring. You want the blue and black /yellow wires. Black/Yellow is the ground wire, blue is the brake light wire. Ignore red, it's for your running lights (which are always lit).
3) the Concours14 has a cheesy plastic luggage structure. That includes the frame, not just the black plastic luggage rack itself. This is testament to the lengths they went to keep the weight down, but it's probably marginal for the big box. So Givi makes a frame reinforcement system, it picks up the same mounting structure as the saddlebag mounts, and supports the piggyback Givi rack. You can see it in the attached photos.
4) you wind up making two 12mm (approx 1/2") holes in the plastic on the tail of the bike. Basically you enlarge some holes that are about 1/4" to twice that. (...if you consider drilling holes in your plastic fairing pieces to be a sacrilege, then don't install the Givi reinforcement kit)
5) the silver color doesn't match exactly, it's lighter and not as blue as the Connie. Judge for yourself from the photos if it's objectionable to you.

I've had mine for a couple of months now, I didn't bother with the reinforcements or the lighting connections(sometimes I take it off) It has worked flawlessly. The only bad thing is folks asking how I like my "beemer".

Rifleman223,
That's a simple question with a complex answer. It seems that Givi is one of the few companies left that doesn't want to do direct retail sales over the web. They refer you to their dealer network.
Well, my local dealer has no stock and gave me a bit of attitude even to look at a brochure or catalog. So I vowed to buy my Maxia top case and accessories over the web.
I found RL Motorcycles (http://www.rlmotorcycles.com/), but surely there are others who will do web orders. The top case itself was drop-shipped from Givi USA, the mounting kit and lights were shipped from RL Motorcycles directly. No problems, I actually saved money because the shipping was less than the sales tax would've been.
I had to laugh when the 'stocking dealer' didn't have any stock, and didn't even want to show me the full line catalog, for fear of revealing their precious dealer pricing maybe? "Yeah, whatever, there's this thing called the internet. See ya." Honestly, I don't know how brick-and-mortar retailers can stay in business if they're not trying to add some value compared to a web transaction.
So far I'm entirely happy with the setup. Total cost was about $525, which broke out as:
mounting kit (Givi SR410) $ 119
Givi E52 Monokey Top Case $ 279
Metallic Silver paint option $ +65
stop light kit (Givi E97) $ 55
and $10 for shipping

Markymark,
Thank you very much!!! This was very enlightening. I am however unsure if I really want to plop over $500.00 for a case. I was really looking at investing on a better case for the Connie, since all I've had for the past year is the JC whitney Givi knock-off. I have had no issues with it and I paid $79.00 for the bag and it came with the mount. I love my connie and will spend the 400 towards the 15K service for now and look further for better and more practical options.
Honestly, if the case was about double the cost or even a little more I would have no issues. But the mount alone is more than I paid for my cheap bag. I know, I am cheap on some things, but I do have issues with ROI with the Givi.
My cheap-a$$ alternative:
Thanks again

I had the jcwhitney trunk for a short while.
I promptly sent it back. Some people are ok with it, I thought it was a piece of junk, probably produced in some 4th world country. No way was I going to carry my laptop in it.
I ended up going with a shad bag from murph's.
If I had to do it over again, I'd probably go with the 52 givi, but the shad was much cheaper, $225 shipped and included the mounting plate.
Another c14 owner made a custom rack for me out of 1/2" thick aluminum. It attaches using the factory 4 bolts.

Nice writeup. Definitely appreciate the pics. I have to say the Givi looks better than I thought but you are up in the $500 price range already, why not just get the Corbin case?? Back rest, more room, paint matches perfectly. I've been debating the Corbin but just not sure if I can stomach the look of such a big case. Just took a 550 mile trip to FL with the girlfriend and it would have been handy though.

frame reinforcement system
Is that frame reinforcement system necessary? I've got my Givi V46 yesterday, and I don't like that reinforcement thing, it looks ugly. Also original luggage rack and frame looks pretty solid, anyways I'm not going to carry bricks in there. I will try to install v46 without reinforcement, will see what happen )

I have been using the givi maxia for about 10,000 miles now. I purchased it at Twisted Throttle. The thing works flawlessly. It is watertight. I have kept my laptop in it for hours in a deluge with no seepage. Also, I installed the mounting rack on my gs 800. Now I just move the trunk from bike to bike depending which I am using....but I dont need no stinking lights!!.. the trunk is a must buy....I've had givi trunks on all my bikes since my 98 Blackbird. That includes the zx-14. They have never let me down and I have stood on them to close them a few times they were packed so tight...buy one!!

I also have the 52 and use it while traveling or shopping. It comes off with the turn of a key so when not using it I take it off. You can carry a pile of stuff in it and I have the lights for added visibility. Pricy but worth it.

Ironic, a friend and I took a trip to the Black Hills and he also had to have a Givi rather than the large JCW trunk I bought. While dicking around with his ever intermittent trunk light connection I noticed our truck latches were identical. Wake up and smell the fried rice! Givi is not hand crafted in Italy, they are likely manufactured in the same plastic injection mold facility.
Granted that is a much nicer looking case with the matching top and all. For myself the JCW works great and have used it for long tours with no issues including using the stock (2nd gen.) luggage rack with an Aluminum backing plate. I did paint it with two coats of Krylon Fusion Satin Black Plastic paint. I only use it for more than overnight trips so I couldn't justify the cost of it sitting on the shelf most of the time.
