Ted G.

Just changed the oil and upon restart, at least until the oild light went out (2-3 sec's) the engine made a noise. I did not hit the gas or anything, just the starter.

I did shut it off after a few min's and restarted it and it did not occour again, just wanna know if this is normal??

Reguards,
Rob

That is the cam chain tensioner doing it's thing. It is hydraulically assisted and with no real oil pressure the cam chain makes noise. You will find that as the bike gets older and if it sits for a while it will make the same noise. This is perfectly normal. Kinda like hydraulic lifters when they have no oil.

It doesn't have a ratchet as well as hydraulic?
I remember my 2000 busa, that got recalled due to the tensioner (second recall as 99's were recalled 2x). Anyways I had the warranty work done before I got the oil changed (500 miles) In which they added hydraulic (oil pressure) lines to the new tensioner which had a ratchet mechanism as well.

Thanks a bunch ted, maybe I can sleep tonight...... I was really worried. I mean most of the big bikes I had, had oil filters that were cartrige type in the pan. This is only the 3rd bike I have had with a spin on (albit torqued to 100 ft lbs from the factory) but none of the others ever made a peep.

I assume there is no ratchet mechanism to this tensioner, I really think it's a bad design. Dual is probably good, but even just a ratchet design works well, you will not get noise. I cannot really define the noise, I either attributed it to the V V T, or loose crank clearances...

Either way I thought you were the best guy to ask, I mean I have done a bizzillion oil changes on cars. Sometimes you hear the rods knock, or hear the valves tap, but am no expert on bikes except for the fact that I do take REAL good care of all my engines, be it car or bike or weedwhacker..

I really was going to come home today and fire it up, before the oil change I took notice of the oil light and it went out after about 2 engine revolutions, way before it started. I have never hear a noise before or since, but it did SCARE me, bad...

I also want apologise for the stupid way I posted this, I should have known better, but I was really in a panic... I am starting to breathe better now knowing this is normal, thanks again Ted, I really appreciate the info... The bike really runs, in the past I have had bikes that did not meet my expectations, but the power and handling this thing is giving me, alone with way more comfort than my 'busa or zx-11 ever had, makes me one happy camper..

Thanks a million times over,
Reguards,
Rob

No problem at all. This does not have a ratchet. Ratchets have an issue that if say the bike when it first turns over pulls hard on the cam chain and the cams have a bit of sticksion from sitting or what ever, the chain will pull hard and push on the guides and flex and create too much slack on the rear of the chain at the adjuster. The ratchet can pick up on that slack and now the chain is too tight and every guide in the system wears prematurely. Better to live with a few seconds of noise than risk wearing all those parts. Also when that happens the cams become slightly retarded.

Ok, it makes sense now... No oil pressure means no tensioner, got it..

It was just scary to restart a bike that has 578 miles on it to hear any noise is all...

A ratcheting tensioner, will tigten to the loosest spot, and can put additional pressure on the guides, makes sense too...

The klr I have only has ratchet (I rebuilt that eng myself), but given the 7k I have on it I have no complaints, it is my daily good weather commuter, the c-14 is for fun. There is a great gap in there performance, but each bike does it;s own thing. The contrast is great, and thats what I love about the pair..
Thanks again,
Rob
