Driveshaft noise

I'm new to the forum and want to start by saying hello to everyone. I've been reading here for a few weeks and finally bought a c14 a few days ago. So far with about 170 miles down I love the bike. The reason for my post is some noise I'm not sure if I should be concerned about. When letting out the clutch from sitting still I can hear a fairly significant click or clunk when the power engages the rear wheel. The more snappy I am with the clutch the louder it is. I'm really not sure exactly where in the shaft it's coming from. Like more up towards the engine or back further more near the wheel. This is my first shaft drive bike so I don't have any idea if it's normal or not. I don't want to run back to the dealer if it's not necessary. I did a search but didn't find anything. Thanks for any help. Scott

my expierence with Kawasakis drive shaft driven bikes is limited to the Vulcans, but I NEVER heard anything from my Nomad....I would check the fluid level in it, and then take it in and have it looked at.....Better Safe than sorry, and it is under warranty...

Welcome to the forum and to your new bike, I would put the bike on the centre stand with the engine off and turn the wheel forwards and backwards. You should be able to hear any abnormal noises, also take the filler cap off and check the teeth on the crown. Do you hear any noises when you are moving and changing gears? If all appears normal I would be back to the dealer, let us know when you resolve the problem and I know you will really enjoy your new machine, I love mine, best bike I have owned, out of 13 or so makes.

Sounds like good advise, this is the first shaft bike I have ever owned out of 20 ir so bikes, and have no complaints so far.. The slip on pc3 and flies out transformed the bike dramatically, and I will NEVER go back to stock, NO WAY IN HELL>>>>>> Feels like my '00busa in power just wish it was lighter and lower is all....

Thanks for all the info everyone. Good to know there is an online place for support. Since my first post, and taking the info given from HDL, I've found the final drive gear oil level was fine and the noise itself is coming more from up near the engine. I've figured out what I'm hearing is when the bike is up on the center stand, engine off, in gear, there is quite a bit of play if you rotate the rear wheel back and forth. What I'm hearing is when I let out the clutch, is this "play" taking up before it starts to transmit motion to the rear wheel. Does anyone else have this, and how much play is normal as I describe when the bike is up on the stand in gear? I have a good 3-4" back and forth stop to stop. It almost sounds like a worn u-joint if that makes any sense.

You might want to read this post in the "other" concours forum before you go dismissing any clunking noises coming from the driveshaft area.... (you might have to log in to see the photos, but I suggest you do).

My bike makes no noise whatsoever no matter how hard I launch.

Been there, am a member under the same name as here (as many of us are) and already saw that. He can always take it to the dealer, but I'd still bet there's nothing wrong. Of course, there's always that one in a bunch that could have an issue, but driveshaft's are not one of the C14 issues...

I know you're on that forum FBA, you're hard to miss.....

I was addressing the OP. I agree it's probably nothing. However if it is something, results could obviously be very bad. My bike makes no noises, I would think that a clunk should at least be investigated. Could very well be drive lash, or something else normal.

Thanks all for the replies and help. Especially the pics and link to the other discussion. I think after reading through that and seeing the pics I'll take it back to dealer and have it checked out. My noise sounds a lot like what Docsnuff describes on the other site and I only have a little over 300 miles now. The first time I heard it I thought something was wrong. Would my vin compared to his have any significance?
