Speedo Error Confirmed

I just checked my speedometer against 2 GPS units (my Garmin Nuvi 350 and my friends Zumo) and the results were identical. At 100 MPH indicated on the speedo both GPS units registered 95.8. Also at lower speeds the indication was about the same, the speedo reads about 4 MPH higher than your actually moving. What struck me as odd is even at an indicated 45 MPH it's off almost exactly the same as it is a 100.

I noticed that mine indicates right at 4 mph high. I noticed this when approaching one of those radar speed signs that flash your speed as you approach a lower speed zone. I was going 45 and the sign said like 40 or 41. I've gone that way a few times and same thing every time.

Jailcop, what tolerance are GPS speedometers accurate to? Surely they too have their limitations.

I don't know what their limits are but I found it interesting that both indicated the exact same speed in my little test. I'm going to try to get in touch with one of my Police friends (I have a few) and see if I can test it against one of there radar guns..

That's a good idea, since what the cops see is really all that matters.

It's a handheld 60csx, it even works in my basement and there is nothing but concrete down there, very sensitive!

I noticed the speedo error right from the get go. I would drive the same road in a car and note the speed and then drive on the bike and get much higher readings while doing the same speed. I have just adjusted accordingly. 80 in a 65 and 90 in a 70, just slowly moving a little faster than the rest of the traffic.
