New C14, new to forum, bag latch recall
Hi!
I picked up my new C14 on 19 May and I love it. I had an old connie for many years then went to a Vulcan Nomad 1500 fi. I missed the sporty ride on the connie and couldn't resist the new model. I love it.
I have one beef and it's mostly with my dealer I guess. Not long into browsing these forums I came a cross the 2 recalls on the bike. I checked mine and sure enough it looks like the saddlebag latch recall was never done. I called the dealer, they checked the VIN and confirmed that it needed the recall work done. I asked them why it wasn't done before they sold me the bike and the answer I got was pretty lame.
So now I have to bring the bike in and drop it off for the day so they can do the work. I asked If I could just drop off the bags and they said no, they need the bike for the day. What a pain.
I guess the moral of the story is even if you buy the bike months after a safety recall don't assume it's been done, check it. The funny thing is my VIN # only showed I needed the latches but not the rear rack.
Anyway, the bike is great and I don't regret getting rid of my cruiser at all, this thing is a blast to ride!

I watched them do mine. It takes less than an hour to mod both latches and the bike does not need to be there.
I'd tell them this and / or find another service dept.

Hi, thanks, I told them this but it the service manager insists he needs the bike there to get information off of for Kawasaki. I asked if he could get the information when I drop the bags off. He said he's never done the recall work before so he doesn't know what information he might need. Wow. I think I might give the General Manager a call.
Sadly I don't have much of a choice as far as service departments go....
Thanks

That was the ticket. I called the General Manager (who happenes to be the guy I bought the bike from) and he said he would call when the parts come in and I can just bring the bike down, he'll do it while I wait. I'm glad .
I should have my Helibar risers in the mail when I get home from work today. My arms are a little uncomfortable stretching for the stock bars so I hope this helps. It will also give me a spot to mount my GPS.

Hey leif, welcome and congrats on the new ride.
Yeah, not riding is the worst part about owning this bike. I just went a week without riding while Spencer was doing my seat mod. Much better now, but what a long week waiting to ride again!
I just got back from my dealer for the bag/rack recall. Took em about an hour or so, but he just gave me the keys to a new Mean Streak to take to town and have breakfast with! So that was nice.
No exactly sure whats new/better about the bag locks. I saw it's a whole new latch/lever/lock assembly. Oh well, like any bike, it's never fun waiting to ride.
You'll probably be very happy with your helibars. Mine made a very welcome change!

Expecting the dealer to be pro-active is a folly. One may get lucky sometimes but for the most part they take the bike out of the crate and get it running. I have never heard of one that they checked to see if it had any recalls until the customer got a notice or knew beforehand. Expecting the dealer to know about this stuff will cause you only undue stress. Just have them order the parts, and when they come in drop off the bike and be done with it. Remember a salesman will tell you anything that they can pull out of their multiple brown holes.

Ted,
My dealer did! They knew before I took it, heck I am almost sure I can drop the bags off and put the rack on myself while I am there, they are real busy! Knowing the one guy who works there is a plus I guess....
They actually knew about 2 weeks before I got the letter.....

Thanks for the welcomes!
I really like the Helibars, they will be a back/arm saver for me during long trips. To bad you can't just pop them off for riding around town, they do take away from the sportbike feel a little.
The next thig to go is the rear rack. I like to carry a lot of junk wit me on trips and that plastic isn't going to be up to the task.
See you on the road!
