Latest update on PR2s
Well it seems that the PR2 rear is worn out after about 6000 miles. The funny part is the front is like new and the bike stills handles beautifully, So well in fact that I have to crank up the rear rebound because of the higher speeds.
So even though the rear didn't seem to last any longer than the Bridgestone the handling has stayed very good and it looks like I will go through 2 rears to one front that is a good cost savings. One also has to remember that the roads here are covered with gravel and a lot more corners were taken riding straight up instead of full tilt. I ordered another rear today and we will see.

I get a discount at the local Kwak shop an I make a point to buy from them. I am not really sure what I paid because I bought new brake pads, synthetic oil and filter, and the tire. And the total was $350ish.

If you had the flies out, you'd be lucky to see 4Kmiles on the rears..
I got 2200 miles on Bridgestones on my ZX...

2200? Shit that would be a record on my 10. I have gone through a set in 1300, The center of the tires were almost like new. I damn near went through a set of brake pads in 2200. Oh yeah that was with no track days. Come to think of it the rears pads were gone in 1600ish. I love those rear brakes.

Just over 7k on mine, still handle great and I'm at the rear wear bar. Lost of hwy droning but a fair amount of hard running too (with flies out). My front still looks almost new too (ain't that neat) and I expect it may go 2x the rear. My stockers handled like shit at 3k rear was showing cord at 4k and the front was trashed.

What is the exact name for these tires? I was trying to look them up. There was pilot road 2, pilot power 2.
Just doing some research and need a little help here....

PR2, Pilot Road 2. They are the new dual compound Michelin Sport touring tire. Test have shown that they have the best wet traction of any tire tested on a Sport Tourer. The Bridgestones have crap wet traction, the front wears enough after 2k miles to severely effect handling. Standard Bridgestone junk. With the Michelins, not only was handling improved over new Bridgestones, but remains as good as new after 6k miles.
I just fixed the title, don't mind me I am a fucking idiot. PS2s sheesh.

Ted,
If wet weather was not an isuue (I am only probably putting on 1-2k a year in nice weather) is there a better michelin option?
Thanks,
Rob

I just checked michelins web site and the net, seems like pilot power 2ct's would rock for me... It will be a while before I even wear the stockers out, but I may not wait untill they are worn out to get something that can really do the moves....

Here is the deal, I run Pilot Power 2cts on my ZX10 and they wear pretty quickly. The Pilot Roads will wear much better and still give you plenty of grip with the added bonus of if you do get caught in wet weather the things have awesome grip. Remember the bike is heavy and it puts much more pressure on the tires.

Look at the rear tire in those pictures, that is after only about 800 miles.

How about pilot sports? Sounds like might be the best compromise for me? Rain, if I would ever accounter it would be possibly 1 day a year, Just love the idea of dry grip...
Thanks Ted,
Rob

I don't understand the need for compromise, The thing can maintain sport bike corner speeds with the pegs dragging on the ground with the PR2s. And wear quite well. The PR2s have a nice soft compound on the sides. Probably as soft as the sports.

PP's aren't recommended for this bike...they're designed for sport bikes with less weight. PR2's are the way to go and offer the best wet handling of all. Why would you even consider not using them over the Pilot Sport's...(an old and about to be discontinued tire)?
I'm not sure you can even buy them in North America anymore -- they were replaced by the PP's.
The PR2's have excellent dry grip and truthfully, though I hate the Bridgestones, they stick to the road well, so imagine a much better grip on wet and dry...they're called the PR2's!
Don't buy the Sports or the Power's - they're just not made or even recommended for big heavy shaft drive ST bikes. That's why they make PR2's!

The pr2's have not officially been qualified by michelin for use on the c14. However, enough people have used them with relatively good results.
The michelin rep I spoke with some weeks back said they haven't tested them on the c14 yet, thus they can't recommend them for it. The feedback on the forums says otherwise though.
I have a set on the bike and another set in the box just in case

Maybe Michelin can't recommend them, but they are so much better then the BSs and I have worn through the rear, so at least we know they won't do anything bad.

I just picked up another rear and I am almost positive they added more rubber and deepened the tread.

Any chance of measuring the depth before you wear into them much?
I have a new set here that I bought a few months ago.

I have a new set in the basement and a set on the bike with about 1500 miles. I'll measure both later when I get a chance. In fact, since I don't have a depth gauge, i'll just take a pic with a penny. The new set came a few weeks ago from dennis krook.

I finally wore out my first set of PR2’s. Ran the rear down to just before the cord was showing and got 10,000 miles out of them. Very happy with that considering I had cord showing on the rear at 4300 on the stockers. Plus these tires handled and gripped very well for their entire life. Didn’t really have to change the front at this point but I did because I finally got that slightly bent rim fixed. Smooth as silk at 140 + again and no more shaking with high speed braking. The PR2’s are fantastic tires and IMO the ones to beat.

For those of you looking at the Pilot Road 2's I did a full write up on a set on a ZX12R. Its over in the ZX12R section....the PR2's have been a really good tire, I have 2300 miles on them on that bike and they dont show signs of any wearing issues.....
