Great Motorcycle Accessory?
Well I just bought my third iPhone. Yes three. The first was for the kid, the second for the wifey. and I was playing with hers and decided to get a third one for myself. So how does one justify getting a $400 phone (not to mention 3 of them). Well you have to look at a couple of things. I thought it would be a nice thing to have while in an airport on a layover. I find myself traveling all over the world. And the thing really does do the Internet well. The email is really good and easy to use. Typing is not bad, (not as easy as a blackberry). But the straw that broke the camels back is the maps. The thing has good maps and you can find restaurants and other stuff. It is not as useful as a GPS but If I am going to carry a phone, I may as well have one that gives me access to info. I plan on doing some serious riding come spring and hopefully taking some overnighters. And having access to the Internet while on the road would be invaluable. And the more I think about the Internet access, email etc. while on the road makes it a pretty good investment.
So the next thing is to get stereo bluetooth in a quiet helmet, (as much as I love Arais, they aren't quiet) because the thing is also an iPod. It's good to have tunes on long rides.

Heres my concern with the I phone.... And I am a huge Apple fan....
If I can have 160GB on an I pod, ( I know a small hard drive that wont fit into the phone) then why only 16 or 8GB storage on an I phone? I'll tell you why....
I really think this was a marketing ploy by apple. They could of used a different storage method... and will...They knew the phone would be a hit, so they released it with a small amount of storage. Now they can release the next version with double or more storage so that all the people who really use them for all their tasks will run out and buy the next generation..... especially business people who care not about the price. It was, and is a cleaver way to sell twice the amount of units, in a particular time period.... If they jumped on once, after they became addicted to it, the second sale is an easy and quick one...
I love the phone and the idea, but I would WAIT until they release the next generation.... I know you need to get on the escalator at some point, but sometimes it pays to wait just a bit...

Just based on internet capability, I'd say the iPhone is a good way to go. I also think I'd adhere to daysoffride's advice. I have a Motorola Razr, which I purchased on Father's Day, 2005. Basically, my phone is from when it was still cool to have a Razr 
There are times when I'm on my bike and I want to check movie times, or something like that, I think an iPhone would be great for that. It won't replace a dedicated GPS unit, it will only add additional functionality to a rider's electronics package.

I am not a big Apple fan, I have always thought of them as cool toys. I don't have an iPod. For me I loaded a playlist that had 85 songs on it and it only took up a small amount of space, I will never fill that 8g. I just like the idea if having the Internet and my email at my disposal at any time, as well as some decent maps, weather info (very important on a bike), and of course the phone. There is one other big detail that I like, my eyes are not what they used to be, and small print can be difficult, and the iPhone allows me to expand the print size to something very readable.

I too had a razr and I found it hard to use for anything much more than a phone. And I am replying with the iphone which is becoming easier and easier to type with.

I love my wife's iPhone and we keep some music and movies on it in case we get bored with checking email and looking at the web. I don't have a cell phone, I gave them up 10 years ago but I'm sorely tempted by this device.
Take this comment with a grain of salt as I'm an Apple Inc. shareholder.

I love the UI on the iPHONE, but it's mot practical for real business use, as any BB outruns it by a factor of 10. I had an iPOD touch for a month, but gave it back to Best Buy, because it wasn't capable of playing a movie without crashing at least 5 times. I'll just stick to my NANO for tunes while riding -- and keep the BB in its holster.

LOL -- "The Hammer" Oh -- I rememember that one alright...it actually withstood a semi running over it with each tire on the right side -- and despite the tire imprint on the phone, it worked perfectly for 3 years after that...
Contractors use to use them as a hammer when they couldn't find one...those phones were tough!
Reminds me of the ol' Bakelite dial phones from ma Bell back in the old days --

My BB is a pile. although it needs replacing. I don't use the iPhone for business just a phone with (dare I say it?) farkles. (gaak) The iPhone is a fun toy that will work well in airports and the can.

What point? Does everything have to have a point?
No, I don't think the iPONE is a farkle; I think it's a very cool and quite functional device; just doesn't work well for me, because I'm a heavy E-mail user, which the BB is better suited for, otherwise, I'd definitely buy an iPHONE.

I have had a BB for years and really like it for email. But the iPhone does email pretty well. I would say it is about 15% harder to type, but I am getting better at it. My BB is for work and even if it did do the internet well, the company wouldn't appreciate a porn search.

That's the thing -- typing on a touch screen just doesn't work well for me, when I compare to a BB. iPHONES have a better browser which is more suited towards porn anyway...:P

When Jane was in England for 3.5 weeks I got pretty darn good at typing on the iPhone, almost as fast as a real full-sized keyboard.

The best BB I've used was with the sure type abbreviated keyboard. I could type a few pages in minutes on that thing...but now I'm on the full keyboard..slower.,.but still way faster than touchscreen for me. In any case, at least you now have a cell phone Stuart...:P
So, if you're filling my drink, what are we drinkin' pal?

The drink part came from a SmackHouse thread where I told about spiking some punch with piss when I was in college . . . Can I fill your drink for you?

I have to carry both anyway so I may as well have something with good access. The BB is a sucko phone. I had an option to get the abbreviated keyboard and tried it. Too weird.

as a novelty, UI, and for ease of use the iPhone is fantastic.
For network/internet speed and performance, the iPhone is among the slowest going, and has no 3G capabiltites. That is not the iPhone's fault, but the Apple exclusively chose the AT&T/Cingular network. MSOutlook e-mail aps, and most any other real business tools, don't rely on the iPhone to perform even close to the Blackberry.
Oh well, enough about the iPhone.
Stalwart, being an Apple shareholder is a good thing!!!

My razr had 3g and it was with AT&T/Cingular. I am typing this on the iPhone and it is not much slower than the BB. You have to hold it like a BB it takes some getting used to but if you are deliberate with your thumbs the thing is pretty easy. It also has the double space period thing but not the hold for caps. It has a pretty good word completion
