TB Sync
Well it is cold and snowy outside so it is time to sync those throttle bodies. I have the Kawasaki tool (had to make an extension tip). It took a lot of fooling around with mirrors, lights and the adjusting tool to access the center screw. There are bypass screws on each TB and they have a dramatic effect on the vacuum throughout the range. I have the things synced pretty well but I am going to revisit it and see if I can dial it in throughout the rev range. I have it pretty close right now but I will try to improve it. When it is perfect at idle the #3 out paces the rest and I was able to adjust the others to keep up for the most part. For sure it is a major improvement over what it started and hopefully it will smooth out the bike considerably. Fred on the other board synced his and he said it was a vast improvement.

How often is this service required? I think I synced the carbs on my ST1100 twice in 108,000 miles. Same question on adjusting the balance shafts. I haven't gotten my service manual yet.

I wouldn't think that one would need to sync more often than once every 50k or so. And even then it is not all that important if the bike doesn't feel like it is vibrating. I would though get it done once after a couple thousand miles to get it as smooth as possible and forget about it.

Well I finally got an opportunity to finish the sync and readjust my balancer shafts. I was able to fiddle around enough to get all four TBs almost dead even from idle to 8000. I have not ridden it yet but the sync turned out awesome, better than I expected. This was a PIA but I am hoping it was worth it.

Well I took a ride a few minutes ago, So here is the deal. It seems that about 60% of noticeable vibrations are gone. The 5-7 k buzz is gone, before I could rest my fingers on the levers at 5k and there was a harsh feel on the levers. That is gone. The pegs are noticeably smoother and accelerating is very smooth. The tank and seat are noticeably smoother. The only thing left is the 4.2 k tingle in the bars that appeared when I put on the Throttle Meister. And that may have improved just a tad. If you have the time and the expertise, it is a worthwhile endeavor.

I just did a quick 50 ride to see how it really felt, and at the end things really started to normalize and it is much, much smoother. Perfect ...no, but I have a feeling when I can get the engine to warm up and flog it a bit the thing is going to get smoother.

I'm jellous I have the time but not the expertise, and at this point I don't care what it would cost to have it done spot on. I have spoke to 3 dealers and all said they have never done one on the c 14 and don't know if they have the proper tools to do it . So Fred H i'm 5 hours from you if interested.

Now that I have done it and understand exactly what needs to be done, it is not that bad. IMHO if you are mechanically inclined at all it is worth buying a set of gauges, the adjusting tool, and a manual. With the help of guys who have done it you should be able to do a good job. In the end the cost may be a bit higher, but you would own the tools. And tools are a great investment, considering they can last the rest of your life.

I have done a sync. on my old V maxes, it was easy to get to and straight forward. I do have the ser. man. for the c 14 but I am not comfortable with how much has to be removed, how hard it is to get to all the ????. the use of a multi meter and so on. Guess i'll have to wait . I love the bike I just hope nothing goes wrong with it. My other bike is a BMW .R1200GS about as simple as it gets

If you have done one, it is not all that bad. If you do decide you want to give it a rip, I can walk you through it. The hardest part IMHO is seeing and engaging the center screw, you have to use a mirror and the upsidedown and backwards stuff takes a bit of getting used to.
