Hard bags falling off?
Read over on COG a few of the ZG1400 owners have had one of their saddlebags fall off at hiway speeds.
Make sure you are getting yours fully and corrrectly attached.

Didn' say if it was or wasn't user error, just wanted to let everyone know that it is possible to think the bag is secure and it actually is not.

From the rear of the C-14 you can easily see if the Red Hook is engaged.....or not.

I am prob opening myself up for a ton of comments but have to add anyway.
I am one of 4 COG members whos side bag came off. And mine was the worst with the bag being totally destroyed by a few Semis. 1 was the result of their own hiccup and the remaining three were apparent lock failures. I cant speak for others but I know without a doubt mine was locked and attached properly. Believe me if I thought for an instant that I did not I would just quietly order a replacement from a dealer with my head held low.
I have sent the locking mech to KAWI but I do not think there is enough left to tell what happened.
I just wanted to share my mishap with others.
Just be aware if you have a new C14.

tex... shitty about the semi vs C14 bag! I do have to point out that if you have the key in the wrong position you can push the back latch down and it will almost engage, but not entirely. At this point you might think the bag is locked and secure, but it isn't. You need to have the key in the correct position to close (or I suppose, to be more accurate - push down) the latch mechanism... then turn the key again to physically lock it.
Do you have pictures of the bag?

fish, That is interesting. So far the only reason I have removed the bags is to demonstrate how easy it is to do. But I am going to be dead careful about that key thing from now on.

Actually the comments you will get will mostly be helpful, (as long as you don't mind being called a doorknob ..good one FBA LOL) there are a bunch of pretty savvy people over here and on the other bikeland forums that will do everything they can to help.

Thanks for taking it easy on me and I appreciate the feedback.
Fish. Thanks for your input and you are right you can false latch that thing if you are not careful. This did not happen here though. When the bag is false latched or not done properly it sets up a little bit. Not a lot but enough that you can tell it is not flat.
No pictures either. I thought about taken photos prior to handing over to dealer but got caught up in things. The only thing that was left was the handle latch and the latch for the bag itself though. The remainder of the bag was blown into half dollar size pieces.

It was the exact same thing on my FJR...but as long as you know, you can deal with it to make sure it doesn't happen!

I have a latch failure and the bag has NOT fallen off so this could be a good example of a failure that's not in a million pieces. I just discovered while putting the right bag on that the red latch was not engaged. I took both bags off and compared the two. When I close the handle on the left (good) bag the red latch moves like it should, solidly into place and you can't push it out of place with the handle down. The right bags red latch however moves very weekly towards the latched position and does not get there. With the handle closed (down) the red latch is just flopping around.
It's going to be a week or two until I can get it into the dealer.
Ok I removed the
27016A 27016-0024 LOCK-ASSY,SIDE BAG,RH
And found the two tabs that are part of the red latch sheared off. They were still sitting in the guides but only the grease was holding them in. One pic shows the tab and the other shows it after I extracted it from the grease.
IMO these tabs could be easily sheared off by the force of hitting a pot-hole or attempting to lower (close) the handle with the latch misaligned. I don't recall hitting or doing anything to have caused this.

Nice ! I wonder if it's worth drilling those out and replacing them with steel roll pins as others have done. Or maybe installing a couple push release pins through the top hooks......or both. Thanks for the heads up WG.

I decided to fix it myself with steel roll pins. Much stronger than original now. Maybe down the road they'll do a recall. Everybody check your red latch on occasion with the bag off the bike and be sure it can't be moved down when the handle is stowed.

wormie, great find and repair. You have probably saved a lot of people real trouble. Maybe we should be proactive in this and just do the steel pin thing ourselves before they go bad. It does look like if ever the latch was incorrectly aligned and then forced closed it would shear. Any bets they did it at the dealership?

I don't know if this applies, but having just returned from the Kawasaki Dealer Meeting in Vegas, I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I installed the bags in reverse. I was busy helping with setup and threw the bags on quickly (the bike won't fit in the team transporter with the bags installed.)
I discovered this thankfully because one dealer came and asked us why we had the bags on backwards. To my dismay, he was correct. Unfortunately the mounting mechanism will allow you to latch them in reverse. What I don't know is if they are actually secure that way. Just food for thought. In looking at them, it's pretty easy to get them reversed (if you're not paying close attention.)

Ted, I thought about moding the other one while I was at it but the way those tabs are tucked in there I could not see how to break or cut them off cleanly. I guess I could have tried misaligning and closing the handle until they snapped, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

yep... I still think it's user error... the only way I can see the latch mechanism being damaged is if you manhandled the bags into place, breaking it yourself... I'm stil trying to wrap my head around the "failure", though I honestly think that 99% of the failures (if there are enough failures to even call them failures) are from people not latching the bags correctly, and as for the internal mechanism "breaking", I'm not convinced that they will break without some sort of "help".
