i had a shoei rf-1000 in xl and liked it just fine. the x-11 helmet shape would not fit my head. after my shoei got lifted i got the arai corsair rx-7. the arai is by far a nicer helmet. it does not lift at high speeds and is very stable when you move your head around at speed. the removable innards are nice too. the arai stays still while the shoei would get some lift pulling on my chin strap. i tried several x-11 shoei on and it felt tight on my forehead. i guess the helmats fit all differently but the arai corsair rx-7 is my choice.

i'd be curious to know how many users here of cheap 1/2 price chinese helmets have had serious head trauma crashes with them... personally I won't roll the dice on this....pardon the pun, but it's a no-brainer for me to spend the few extra bucks on an arai..

Wonuldn't it be fare if you asked for the users that have crashed and NOT suffered "serious head trauma?" I wear HJCs and have had 2 accidents in the past and both times the helmet worked perfectly!! I'm sure there are plenty of "head trauma" riders that were wearing ARAI, unfortunately they're not mentally stable to chime in. Suggesting to wear a brand and scaring people into prejudging are two different things.

We all have choices and opinions supporting but unless you plan on being a crash dummy for the manufactures mentioned above and reporting the outcome, you're just fishing(pardon the pun)

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/motorcycle_helmet_review/index.html

Motorcyclist's test a few years back proved that more expensive helmets aren't necessarily safer and that the Snell standard is just too hard. The cheaper DOT helmets did a better job of head protection....but the Arai's and Shoei's are just sooooo much more comfortable and better designed for airflow, balance, etc.

why would that be "fair"? I buy a helmet to give me MAXIMUM protection - that includes serious head impact.... therefore I buy Arai helmets... for me that's just the way it's always been. I'm not prepared to roll the dice - thanks but no thanks.

Thanks Slates for the reported data supplied by reputable source. I'm sure theses findings were based on accident reports and tangibles corresponding. Paying extra doesn't mean the quality is better, getting a deal or paying less with another brand surely doesn't mean you're doomed or have purchased something inadequate.

Factual research has proven to be most benificial (IMHO)

actually super, most of that report's been debunked...

anyways... it's a free country... heck most states dont even require that you wear a helmet...

like I said earlier - you can decide "how safe" you want to play it...

I mean, a Hyundai and a Volvo both meet DOT standards, right? Me? I'd rather be in a Volvo if they dropped me off a parking lot roof in a car, just like that commercial..

you can spend your money how ever you see fit.

Fish, I understand were you are coming from. I like the finer things in life and I'm a big safety stickler but I just didn't think you asking for the users that have had failures and not include those that have had success was fair. Both you and I can afford the best but some on this board might be penny pinchers or plainly cannot afford a $600 plus helmet. What should they get? I just wanted to elighten that cheaper does not always equal death and give some positive feedback from my experiences. I HOPE NONE of US experience an accident that warrants our dialog. B cool

I try to wear the best helmet money can buy. Most mainstream helmets offer good protection, some better than others. Some cheap helmets offer as good if not better protection against certain types of impacts. But the difference between a cheap helmet and a quality helmet is comfort over an extended period. Want to find yourself overly distracted and miserable? Wear an uncomfortable helmet for a while.

any helmet is better than no helmet. i had my life saved before by a simpson, and another time by a shoei. if you get a chance to wear an arai you won't go back. all can protect to a certain extent, i just want what feels best to me, and hopefully saves me from harm.

i love my arai RX7 Corsair.....and its freaking louddddd....but comf

shouldnt be loud... you sure it fits correctly? arai's quietest helmet I've ever owned.

It fits perfectly, bought the thicker top pad for it, and its awsome fit wise......but loud as hell......its NOT the quietest helmet design they have had, not even close. My Quantam f and Quantam 2 were far quieter. But those were heavier and buffeted more....

The latest one I have is an Arai.It is loud as hell and freezes your head in the winter with the vents closed. There was an article in a cycle mag which tested various helmets. They found some of the cheaper helmets gave better protection than their more expensive cousins. In this case money wasn't getting you a better helmet.I believe that some brands fit a head shape better then others, and they are only designed for the drop from a sitting position not a crash.

i have a arai astral and i absoutely love it! wouldnt buy anything but a arai!

let me ask you this question though what have you tried? I would ware both arai and shoei and as a matter of fact im having a custom paint job layed out on AGV Stealth helmet, havent tried that one yet but thats mostly for wearing it at the track.

i have had 2 hjc's, tried on a icon, just havent had one to fit my head as comfortable as the arai. never tried a shoei.

I have had two 100mph plus crashes wearing Arais, the first one I landed mostly on my head and was knocked out for a while but I had no other damage other than some skin marking where the impact was,the helmet stayed in one piece.
The second one didnt knock me out but banged my head around a lot leaving the helmet intact but heavily scuffed where the contacts had occured.
I was interested to see the release of the new model but it looks like another corsair for me because I have 5 visors in different styles for year round riding and they wont fit the the new version.Plus I will get a very good deal on what is to be a discontinued helmet.
With any protective gear it pays to buy the best you can because its all replaceable unlike flesh and blood.

I have to agree with you there, Ken. With all the money that is DUMPED into our bikes I am surprised that someone would draw their budget line on their helmets. I would rather forego the aftermarket exhaust rather than buy a cheapy helmet.

I went to my local dealership this past weekend and I saw the new Scorpion helmets, and I was tempted to buy one to go with my Shoei. The salesguy told me that Scorpion is only this cheap because it is new and that this is the time to buy one, and that it offers a lot of features that you cannot find on more expensive helmets. The only reason I did not buy one is because he did not have my size in stock yet.
