What will the 1098 be worth in 20 yrs
What do you guys think the 1098 will be worth say 20 to 30yrs from now? Will it bring good money like the kawasaki H-2s? or will it be like some 20 yr old bikes that are worth nothing?

If we knew what would be collectible (Valuable) we would all be buying and saving them. Then they wouldn't be valuable. Buy it because you like it. FYI my 1974 750SS (New, never ridden) is doing pretty good.

I'd think it's safe to say that most older Japanese bikes have a far lesser "value" (monetary) than their Italian (or other "exotic") counterparts...
kindofa strange (and loaded) way to start this topic...
let's put it this way... what's an A1 12R worth now? I when I bought my A1 I traded my 1994 Duc 900SS on it and I got $12K on trade. Show me a 7 year old Kawi that holds its value like that.

Don't think it was strange or loaded in anyway, Funny you do. Just wondering what some opions were. Ihave a 2002 Z06 vette that I don't drive much and I was thinking of selling it and buying a 1098 and was just thinking what would be worth more in 20 yrs. I know what some of the older vettes a going for these days but I don't really think the Z06 will do that well, but I could be wrong.

It's loaded, or perhaps "skewed" because Jap bikes hold their values like a seive holds water...

Well..... my old R1 has about $4K worth of add on, suspension, exhaust, Ohlin's damper etc etc. It's still very pretty and works well, but it's doubtful I could get $5K for it. Considered a " benchmark" bike, it's market value is small compared to the no haggling MSRP of $10,200 I paid in 99' ( along with a deposit in line for 5 months). That bike and this new S are the only bikes I've paid full list for........... but no set up or freight. One other Ducati dealer in our area where I first put a deposit wanted $1000 freight and set up..........and then couldn't say "when " the bike might be coming................... origional question, with inflation at %2-3% for the next 20 years an unmolested model should bring a good price, but your $$$ are worth less and less over time. Anyways, justifying a purchase as an investment ( unless you are the lucky fellow with the wonderfull 74' SS) is kind'a bogus...........It's FUN and Cool and I must have this because someday I'm dead and gone are good enough reasons for me.

There are some 20 and 30 yr old jap bikes selling for some very good money, but that's not what I was asking if it would be worth more then a jap bike. I just made a comparison to how well the h2 sells for these days and was asking opions on if anyone thought the 1098 would sell good 20 yrs from now considering it is the first ducati priced well with hp and technology. Will it be collectable someday.

There's a japanese guy here in town that regularly buys 70's and 80's UJMs and ships them back to japan because there is a big demand for retro there. I'm sorry, I raced against a lot of H2's back in the day, and other than straight line acceleration, they had little going for them, spindly frames, #hit brakes etc. I guess they would attract the way an origional Suzuki X-6 hustler would, but one might imagine a bike like the RC 30 or origional ZX7RR having more value over time as they were produced in far fewer numbers, For the same reason( numbers) I believe the 1098's will be collectable. Just my opinion.

Let's not talk about 30 year old (now "vintage") machines... let's compare something reasonable... a 10 year old Duc vs a 10 year old Jap sportbike...

You'd have to have your head in the sand to not realize that over time Harley's ( uggghhhh) and Ducati's seem to hold value the best of most manufacturers. GENERALLY, I believe they will always be perceived as more desireable and more " rare " than a particular japanese counterpart............................. that being said, I can well imagine that the Ducati used bike values will suffer because of the relatively low asking price for the 1098's. Maybe if you have an R model they might bring big $$ used.............. but how would you like to be a 999 owner now? ouch

Forget about resale, life goes by real quick, live for the moment, a short amount might be all you have left, time is what you should worry about, once spent, it can never be gotten back, ever, so, don't wait, do it !!!
