2012 14R cam chain issue??
Wondering if anyone has heard of cam chain issues on the 2012 14R. My tuner just ported the head on his 2012 14R. When he had the cylinder head off, he noticed that the cam chain was, in his word, "gnarly", i.e., kinked in several places. He replaced it. Unfortunately, he did not dyno his bike immediately before replacing the cam chain. I recently dynoed mine (9,100 miles) after installing an Akra header onto my existing slipons and lost a couple of HP through the rpm range compared to my previous dyno session several thousand miles previously. Granted, different days and different conditions, but same dyno. My tuner suspects that the cam chain may be the problem.
I know we have experts here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

if u mean changing it after every season, id rather replace a 99 dollar part compared to a couple 1000 when it breaks.

Who is your tuner?
Blais Cycle in Dania, FLorida. His 14R is up to 223 hp on pump gas, with Akra header and Akra S1000RR race mufflers, ECU flash, PCV, and head work.

Sorry, but I would trust him to tell the truth about anything, especially what might be wrong with your bike. He simply is more interested in selling you parts and blowing your bike up on his dyno (which by the way is known to be way optimistic). Believe me when I tell you. He "tuned" that is a laughing matter, my turbo bike on his dyno and I believe a piston let go right there although I can't prove it. If you know anything about turbos they should NEVER be over 12.5 AFR his "man" tuned it to mid to high 13 AFR trying to get more power. I didn't realize it until I got home and looked at the sheets. He knew what it was and told me go out and have some fun. Yea sure, and then bring it back after it blows up. As far as I'm concerned he is trying to sell you a new cam chain which is more than likely perfectly good. I WOULD NEVER EVER EVER B RING MY BIKE TO BLAIS CYCLE. I'm now done ranting and you can choose to believe me or totally disregard my experience and opinion of him.

Wait, NO ONE makes an aftermarket cam chain ? WTH ! and if kawi knows about the problem from earlier bikes, why wouldnt they upgrade a part that is so cheap to improve, and can cause major damage ?

I put a brand new chain in my bike and when it went to Jim for new pistons and so on the chain was already kinked . The old one did same thing . Dunno if it's the chains being made or what . My 08 zx14 with 14 tho miles chain is like brand new .

that suck man, not everybody with a dyno is a tuner, something similar happened to me (not as bad) ...but man u trust them thinking they know what they are doing and they just fuck ur shit up cuz they dont know crap... and would a bad cam chain take away hp? i don't know but it sound stupid imo, seems they just want to charge u for unnecessary work.

I switched to the Ape tensioner 20k miles ago when the oem pos quit working. Haven't had to listen to the rattle since, at 43k now. Only adjusted it once in all that time. Great product in my opinion.

I've never heard of the rattle causing issues but I'd opt for the manual tensioner myself. Rebuilt a few first gen 14s and never noticed stretched out timing chains.

APE Manual is the way to go! My stocker would rattle forever after a day at the dragstrip. APE and no more rattle.....been that way for at least 5k, never adjusted again after initial install either.
