Nitrided rings
Anybody else using them and have a hard time getting them seated?

Is the surface treatment titanium nitride? If so I'm not
surprised they're resisting wearing in... I've measured Rockwell C hardness approaching 73 on parts (CrMo steel) treated similarly.
I have no idea what the relative hardness of the bore coatings are but if its close to the hardness of the rings there could be long term issues.

I would doubt it is titanium nitrate. That's like 4 times harder than black nitrate. Suzuki went with chrome nitrate rings on the gsxr around 2005.

All I know is they are gas nitrided. That is some tough stuff.

I have on a 1397cc Busa motor. It took forever for them to seat. For a long time it consumed oil and smoked a little. if you backed off at the end of a run it smoked a lot at first. Enough as to where my friends asked if I was going to rebuild the motor. Finally about the time I had decide I must have put the rings in wrong it just quit smoking while at the dragstrip. Once it sealed it was good to go. Now I did not have much street time on the motor but it took a lot longer than I thought it should to the point I was fixing to tear the top end down.

Thats what I am getting, some crankcase smoke at idle. I did the same thing, started second guessing myself. But after putting 30+ engines together over the years, I know I double and triple check everything. The weather hasnt been too cooperative for street riding but I did get a little in yesterday.

I would give it a little more time. I remember watching a run on video of my bike and seeing how much it smoked when I backed off the gas at the end of a run. it was terrible. Once they sealed it remained smoke free the whole time I owned the bike.

Maybe they will seat this weekend at the track. That top ring is stubborn.

If u dont remember back in 2000 the zx12r had a breakin mile sticker that said 1000 miles for break in then 2months later a recall was done on them that changed the stickers to 2000 mile breakin ,the ring material and the cylinder material need miles to seat because of there resistance to wear and the type of break in oil, honeing and crosshatch of the cylinders play a big part in this too.

For many years titanium nitride (Gold in color) has been used on ring faces in racing application where the cylinder is plated with Nikasil for better sealing, less friction and wear, gas nitride treatment is normally done on metal surfaces to improve wear, normally opposite of of the ring, like the bore, a crankshaft or gears, it's been around since the 80's.

Yes we had the same problems back in the day on the big bore GS1150's and GPz1100's. Seems like someone told me once to put some Comett/Borax in the intake or something to help them seat. I thought they were crazy.
