19 tooth front sprocket on gen 1 ZX-14?

Hello,

Does anyone know if a 19 tooth front sprocket will fit on a 1st generation ZX-14? Specifically a 2006 model. I am a big fan of large sprockets, especially because I will be getting a custom rear sprocket and the larger the rear sprocket, the more easily I can show it off and draw attention to it. I also want to gear the bike up for better gas mileage and to correct the factory speedo and odo error.

I was thinking of going from the stock 17-41 530 sprockets with 116 links of 530 chain to something like 19-43 (+2, +2) sprockets and running 118 links of 530 chain to compensate. The rear axle should be in the same exact position by doing this (assuming neither chain is elongated).

Question is will the 19T front sprocket fit (for 530 chain) and if so, do I have to mod anything or remove the sprocket cover? This is for street use. I don't mind cutting or removing a few sprocket cover bolts but I don't want to lose my speed sensor cuz I like to know my speed and mileage.

I am disappointed that so many bike manufacturers still use that stupid speed sensor near the front sprocket. It would be SO much better if they read that from the front wheel. Then if you made sprocket changes, it wouldn't whack out the speedo and odo with bogus numbers. Heck I've even seen much cheaper Suzuki SV650S models with the "proper" speed sensor on the front wheel so why can't the "flagship" Kawi model have this? Seems like the Engineers frequently get the "hard" stuff right and the "easy" stuff wrong!

19-43 is like 17-37, i hope you have monster power, don't plan on racing anyone or you weight 70lbs.

I am not trying to be a smart ass, just wanted you to know if you didn't already.

"speed and mileage"
speedo healer works for me.

A 19t will fit, all you have to remove is the case saver behind the cover.

A few things...

- No I am not buying a 2012 or 2013 ZX-14 (at least not anytime soon) although I do really like that white color they offer.

- A speedohealer is a waste of money for me. I can do similar with just a +1 front sprocket.

- 19-43 sprockets are NOT the same as 17-37. 17-37 is "taller" gearing. 19-43 is only about a 6.6% "gearing" increase which is likely enough to correct the speedo/odo but not enough to lug the engine. Even if I geared up say 10%, the engine and clutch could handle it. I only weigh about 170 ready to ride and my bike has been lightened up about 30 pounds already with more weight coming off soon. I plan on taking another 20 pounds off the bike and me losing another 5 pounds of bodyweight.

Also, 18-39 sprockets (+1, -2) would make my 2006 ZX-14 have a new 5th overall gear ratio identical to stock 6th overall gear ratio so even though I would be gearing up, in theory, it would have the same top speed if I ran the resprocketed bike in 5th gear as that same bike with stock sprocket sizes in 6th gear.

- Hmmm, not sure if I want to remove that case saver. Think I'll go with 18-42 sprockets and a 200/50/17 rear tire instead. That will give me 20 MPH for every 1000 engine RPMs in top gear which is "perfect" for what I normally do. I don't plan on going 200 MPH nor do I think my bike has enough power to do so nor do I want to.

- I don't race on my 14. I am gearing up for possible better gas mileage and as a "poor mans speedohealer".

An 18t will work with no modifications.

I'd go with an OEM ZX12R front sprocket, it has the rubber dampner & is quieter.

Anyone got one of those "damped" OEM ZX12R 18T front sprockets new? I have an 18T new sprocket here that will fit my ZX-14 (12 splines). It has lightening holes in it and I weighed it vs. a solid 15T (both for 530 chain) and they are the same (0.56 pounds). I think people complained about noise coming from the front sprocket when they drop to 16T (-1). 18T (+1) should be fine.

As far as quieter, unless someone has the stock exhaust on, I don't think it will make much difference.

When people complain about the noise dropping down to a 16 it's not because of the size it's due to most aftermarket sprockets not having the dampner on them.

The longest I've ridden a bike with stock exhaust is home from the dealer, I always run performance pipes and I can tell the difference in sprockets with & without the dampner.

Your mileage may vary.............

That is interesting because I have a 16T (+1) front sprocket on my Bandit 1200 and it is quiet as a mouse. I can coast on that bike (with the engine off) and it doesn't even sound like the bike has a chain. I admit I did downsize from 530 to 525 chain so that may be part of it.

If someone has an 18T sprocket with dampner for the 06 ZX-14, I'd be wiling to try it. Perhaps I could swap you for something else. I wonder if this site has a wanted section.

Again (for clarity), my target sprockets on my 2006 ZX-14 are 18-42 (+1, +1). That, with a 200/50/17 rear tire, should give me "20 per" in top gear so at a true 60 MPH in top gear, I should be taching 3 grand. Correcting for the factory speedo/odo error should also "fix" the onboard MPG calculation which is good.
