Tapping into factory launch light

Has anyone ever tapped into the factory shift light and hooked up a external shift light off it?
I was thinking of using the factory launch light and just getting a extra light to go on it. Thoughts?

I thought about this too...never ventured into the dash though. I'd just like a better light. I'm sure someone could do it though.

I know what you mean.I can`t believe kawasaki made the dash with no contrast or brightness adjust and a shift light not mounted top center on the dash...........I have a dyna shift light and minder off my 12r that i will put on the 14r.If the oem s/l on the 14r is led I would think the dyna incandescent bulb would blow the output circuit to it.

if you can do a little soldering you should be able to wire into a relay and have the factory light act as a trip or remote wire to activate an external shift light.

It sounds very simple if you can get a schematic of the motherboard for the dash.

i dont know if you have ever torn apart the dash and checked out the motherboard though. Everything is micro and not a whole lot of room for error. Might be a task of getting a spare dash and hacking it up instead of possibly toasting your own.

I did the LED swap on my 09 and it was a very tedious process.

even if you tapped into the factory shift light but have an increased rev limit it won't really do you any good will it?

11k is where it stops on the oem shift light settings. For now i have mine set a 10,500.When i see the flash i push the button being set for the power wheelies and all hell to be unleashed.I was on the great river road going thru Godfey Illinois today redlining every gear.I still can`t get over how violent this zx14r is.I still don`t even have the reflash to uncork this wild fucker....This thing is the devil on 2 wheels.

I have a dyna shif minder. I don't care to use the factory shift light as much as the launch part of it.
I was thinking about it this morning and curious if anyone has done it.

I have had my shift minder since 2009 with zero problems. I'd buy another one anyday.
I tried hooking up a msd one, wouldn't work. Even Roger Starrette said they wouldn't work on a zx14.

I have a buddy that repairs the electronic dashs in new cars and he says it cant be done. Or that it cant be done by him anyway. I have a boost by smith on mine and just put one on a friends bike. No issues, auto shift works everytime.

My thoughts (not a electrician) was there are two wires running to the small light on the dash. I thought they could be re run to a larger light.
Obviously I was wrong...
Thanks for the information guys

Timing is everything in anything.......I`ve had my 14r since july.I had the dash off and apart to install the 2 red lights for my k-40 radar / laser defuser system.I installed it 2 weeks after getting the bike home.I had`nt ran the shit out of it yet at that point but did set the launch and shift rpms real low so i could check them out.I knew right then the shift light location sucked.
As stated by someone else it can be done .A relay should be all that is needed but an op amp to drive the relay while boasting the original signal may also be required but i doubt it.In my case I already own the dyna light and shift minder. For the challenge i might just go a head and see if I can trigger it off the o e m light wire`s.

If you can get at the factory bulb easily, you could attach another light to it. Just don't know how hard it is to get to.

I've been using the Raptor launch/shift light all along. Nice unit. I like that the launch side isn't dependent on the clutch switch. Uses the speedo sensor to determine if the bike is moving or not.

BTW...it is a very simple hookup.

Can't really answer that question since my ZX14 doesn't see rain. Mostly the track but I do ride it on the streets occassionally. If the weather reports aren't good, it stays in the garage.

Hey Dusty!
It appears someone else already completed the same idea i had a few months ago.

Check out this link and diagram.

Got my Raptor shift light installed and working .. I do not have the duel mode shift light so it has no launch light , but i don't need that anyway ... Simple hook up and a good price .. It's a very small unit but puts out a lot of brite light when triggered .. At night you will have to use the red cover that comes with the light...

Only problem i see is the light can only be adjusted at 200 RPMs range .. Meaning if you want it set at 11,100 you can't do it , you have to pick from 11,000 or 11,200 .. I shift at 11,200 so i'm setting it at 11,000 .. I'm hoping the delay time between me seening the light and pressing the button adds up to close to 200 RPMs ..Testing will tell me what if any changes i need to make or adjust to ..

The other thing i would like to note is setting the dip switches is a bit tricky ... On a ZX14R or a gen 1 zx14 you only hook up to one -coil wire ..I like that part but you have to set the dip switches to match that style of hook up .. I had to try a few different setting to make the unit work , not that hard to but it did take some time to figure it out .. The shift light has a low limit of 9900 and a high limit of 19,800 , so on our bikes you have to set the box to the high limit .. I set mine at 5000 on one switch and 500 on the other rotary switch ..Now you have to double those numbers by putting the unit in the right mode so it doubles your numbers on your rotary switches .. So 2x 5000 plus the 2x 500 gets me at 11,000 , if i move the 500 to 600 i get 11,200 and that is where my bike runs its best numbers .. Were i would really like to be is at 11,100 or 11,150 but you can get those numbers .. As i get used to the light and my reaction time pressing the button gets faster i may be able to use the 11,200 setting ..

As fas as mounting it to the bike i used radio shack hook lock ( like velcro only stronger ) and put it on the Ign switch at about 10:00 oclock .. Lock to lock on the steering it clears everything with no problems .. Looking at it from the wind screen i can see the switches and make adjustments as needed .. So it's mounted just below my line of sight as i'm going down the track ..It might not be the best place but with the hook lock i can move it if needed ..
