Lithium Batteries
Hey guy's........was wondering what kind of luck you have had with the lithium batteries. My wife's 2001 GSXR 1000 battery gave up the ghost last night. The original battery since she bought it new in May of 01........ Looking at Ballistic.......any opinions?
Thanks
Charles

Got the small one from Brock for the 14r, weighs 1.9 pounds, saved 10 pounds alone! Very expensive, but it does very well and can allegedly be left unattended for 3 months and still start your engine!
Time will tell but so far it is great and has no problem running all the upgraded electrical components on the bike...Radar, Zumo 550, Mic-Mutes Amplifier, police brake lights, HID 55 watt, pair of PIAA 1100 Platinum bulbs, and keeps the Iphone at 100% while driving, shows 13.2 volts under power with everything turned on.

Charles,
Don't know how cold of weather you guys ride in but mine doesn't like it when it drops in the 40's. I have to turn it over a couple times to put some heat in the battery before it will start the bike.
I'll buy another one when this one dies, I like the 10lbs weight loss since I'm never gonna lose it!!

Thank's Dan. We don't ride much when it is cold so that should not be a problem. Are you and the other guys using the 8 or 12 cell on the 14? The wife brought home an 8 cell for the 1000 yesterday, weighs less than 2 lbs!

I don't have it on my 14 but have the 8-cell Ballistic EVO 2 in my 10 and I haven't had any issues so far. I have an alarm and have left it on for a week at a time. Bought it back in February or March... The regular batteries struggle after a week with the alarm on but so far no issues whatsoever with this one.

I went with this 270 CCA . From their web site I now see they have recommended 315CCA . Not sure why ? I've started the bike when temp was as low as -20c with zero issues. Impressive.

That's good to know. I ride my bike all year round and if it won't start the bike when it's below freezing then the loss of 10lbs doesn't do me much good. I'll have to look into a lithium when my battery dies.
It was 27* F this morning. BRRRR!

I'm thinking the standard trickle charger is not the route to go, seems like they need a dedicated style charger for their design........'course I could be wrong.
They've came a long way since I bought mine a few years ago, apparently colder weather doesn't affect them like the older ones. Good to know.

I have a Shorai fitted and it doesn't need a trickle charger.
My bike was stood for eight weeks last winter and it started first time in below freezing temperatures.
I also have an alarm fitted and this was active for the whole time.
There are plenty of youtube videos of below freezing performance.
I believe there was one person who put his battery in the deep freeze to test the performance and it still fired up!

I have had the 18ah Shorai for 10k miles, Ive heat soaked it with summer cross counrty 1500mile trips, and cold soaked it in Washingtons and now Colorado's cold winters with no problems at all. Starts my 14 up with ease even in the sub zero temps. Can be had for around 140.00 delivered online. Best mod $ per pound that I know of. This battery has a balancing port on it for a special charger if ever needed, dont trickle charge these.

Dog here was the one who placed his Shorai in the freezer. May have been the smaller 14AH but can't remember ? Maybe he can comment.
Early Turn Techs would Not start my bike below 20 c without cycling the key. Even then it was any ones guess if she would fire up. Kinda sucked if it was warm day then turned cold at night. Push starting this bike does not go well as it is slow to fire and when it does look out. After second time it was removed.
Took little guy(see pic)and placed in in the 6R where she still lives today. So it all worked out.

Yep... That was me.
It was the 14ah. Here's the vid:

That battery ended up in my 10r and still going strong.
Have bought 5 Shorai batts now. Nothing but good things to report.
Have not purchased a Ballistic (yet), but have also only heard good things about them. Next lightweight battery I need, I plan to get one. Made in the U.S.A... and sold track side.

I brought a ballistic for the bonneville season, mainly for the cca rating , weight is no penalty to us
but had a unknown drain on power that caused to to go flat overnite , happened twice before we found the problem,
the battery never realy recovered properly, and ended up bringing a jump pack to the start line to be sure of the bike starting (a low compression turbo 750cc suzuki)
Since found out they can be reprogrammed (or so i'm told) and brought back to life
So for anyone using these DO NOT let them go flat, and if you do, send it back for servicing
Before going flat i was very impressed with its performance ,and i will buy another in future if i can confirm they can be brought back to life

Given how quickly i seem to kill standard batteries (mostly due to leaving em untouched over the winter or longer) i think i may have to grab me one a these. well under twice the price, but 8 to 10lb less and doesn't mind being left for a couple months? sign me up.
I will need to watch for the flatline condition tho, cause i'm bad about that. thx for the warning Oz.

Does the 12-cell fit in the 14 without any extra work? Been meaning to get one but wasn't sure if I should get the 8 just from fitment concerns....

Plenty of room for the 12 cell. My son has a 16 cell Anti-Gravity battery that he bought at Adams Performance that will easily fit and it really zings his motor over.
The battery is really quality looking and performs great. I'll be going with this one next time.

I am reading about the Antigravity batteries Dan. They sure look to be of high quality. The Ballistic seem to be a little more powerful but don't have as nice of terminals as the AG's.
The two companies seem to use the same math to determine CCA's and AH's also. Thanks for the link.........
