The Snake & Deals Gap
Just spent 3 weeks in TN and got to check out their roads. If you're ever near Bristol you need to check out Hwy 421 The Snake towards Shady Valley and on through to Mountain City. It's every bit as good as Deals Gap & in some ways more challenging.... more off camber turns and tighter switchbacks. Pics to come

Ride during the week & it's good. Weekends are too busy with tourists & locals are off making for too much traffic which brings out the cops.

Great pics and looks like you had a fun ride. The Carolina's and Tennessee both have great roads. Passing through the Carolina's next month on the way north to Maryland so might have to take a detour on the way back home.

+1
On way back from my recent Canada ride I went through Maryland on the way back, took mountain roads the whole way from Fredericksburg (spelling) to North GA!
Hit both the 421 Snake (thats my pic below) and the Dragon too

Back in the early '90s, I lived in Mountain City for 2 years. I rode 421 several times a week, and many of the other area roads. Backbone Rock was always a favorite pull-off to chill.
I don't go to the Tail unless it includes an extended trip north to Shady Valley. Incredible roads all over that area.

I don't even know if they existed back then. Didn't care. I was too busy hooning around on my '85 GPz900 Ninja to notice anything else but apexes and shade-damp off-camber decreasing-radius bliss.
My first scope-out of 421 was the second day I arrived in January in an '89 Mustang 5.0 LX. It was gloomy and cold, but I went up the mountain anyway; not realizing there was a nice little mini-blizzard at the top elevation and snow dumped all through Shady Valley. I was incontinent for the entire 2 hour controlled slide to the bottom. It's the most vivid terror I've ever had in a vehicle. My wife was with me and literally cried hysterically and clawed the door, dash, and seats the entire time. And we still had to get back home via 133 through Damascus and 91 back to Mountain City.
Everyone needs to ride that area. Just avoid Januarys and snowstorms. (But most aren't as stoopid as I was then and they already know better.)
