thats most of the race bikes .. from what i learnt the busa has the issue of weak shift fork shafts that flex under load thus pulling on the shift fork which then makes the bike jump out of gear ... once it happens you got to replace shaft and forks and cut gears mostly 2nd gear . also only for some dumb reason only 3rd thru 6th have a back cut.. they also have a weak output shaft on gen 1 for high HP and will snap.. . but they only have 4 dogs which give a bigger window of engagement to a zx14 5 dog gear.. and yes them yamaha's are junk for transmissions been there done that too... the gixxers have all gears cut from 07 up from what i'm told and have no issues with transmissions .. i like all bikes but they all have weakness somewhere.. just as they have strong points ..and everything wears over time

Well I sent everything back to Matt @ CycleTek. He went through and tested everything and it checked out ok. I got the setup back this week and didn't have time to get the two parts Lee recommend (although I still plan to).
Took it to the strip today. First two passes- shifted perfect from 1st to 4th. Every pass after that guess what? Yep, wouldn't shift into 3rd. To try and preserve good ET's, I airshifted 1st to 2nd and tried to footshift 2nd to 3rd and it wouldn't go into 3rd on the first try, but went into 3rd on the 2nd try. Riding home I opened it up in 1st, hit the button, it shifted into 2nd then popped out of 2nd and into neutral. Awesome. And the kill time was set to one click below max kill time on the box.
Your guys thoughts? Here's the pics of my setup, sorry if you can't see very much. I'm beginning to think it really is the tranny. Which isn't a bad thing because i'm pulling the motor next month anyway. Thanks. Mike

Mine didn't , i had to cut the spring down some to get it to have some free play ..

Are you using auto shift? and are you sure your not spinning the tire?
Mine will do the same thing on auto-shift or on a slick track

I can see from the picture of the ram you don't have it set right .. You don't have the ram out far enough to hit 3 gear or 2 for that matter .. Move the gear shifter down one spline and you will have more upward ram travel that you need to complete a good shift ... You still need to move the air valve down to the ram and that will speed up your shifts . Make sure you have 145 PSI to the Ram on all shifts ... That 4 oz bottle is to small and doesn't have the volume needed ..
An easy way to set ram travel is to remove it from the lever .. The ram you have has 3 inches of travel ... Push the ram all the way in and then put it out 1 and 1/2 inches and mark it in the ram shaft with a felt tip marker ... That will be center of your ram travel .. Now with the ram pulled out 1 and 1/2 inches ( to the mark you just made ) move your shift lever so that the locking pin goes in place without moving the ram travel .. Now you will be centered in the ram for pleanty of upward and downward shifting .. If you can't get it to line up by moving the lever down on spline you will have to move the pin hole closer to the shifter shaft .. You may have to drill another hole in the arm .. It's ok it will not hurt having two holes in the shift arm ... Now that upper spring is way to tight and will bind the shifter .. Pull the spring off a cut one or two of the coils off but leave just enough so you have just a little pressure but can easly moved in and out on the ram stud ..
Since i have replaced all the CycleTek parts and moved the air valve to the ram i have not missed a single shift .. I use a 20 oz bottle and my pressure stays 145 all the time for 100s and 100s of shifts .. Now that i have a good set up i have removed a ton of kill time and not missed shfts ..
.. This picture show how much ram i have to upshift than yours .. This picture was taken before i relocated the air valve to the ram .. You can see i had moved the lever down as well as moved the pin closer to the shifter shaft ..This gave me full travel up and down for complete up or down shifts .. I should add that regulator you are using is a pile of crap ment for paint ball guns .. Mine would be 145 and on the next pass be 90 psi , it's trash .. you need a better regulator like this one pictured below

mine does too with a race cut transmission ..hell mine can make all 5 shifts and not move 2ft .. doing burnouts mine shifts ..1 other thing i see you guys can have issues from is the shift lever binding in the cleaves..i always grind it out to give more clearance

Wee it does have a lil' play in it. A few months ago I had it tight and same thing :\.
Audio- No auto shift, and it's not spinning the tire.
Lee- Awesome info thank you so much, i'll give it a try and let ya know!
What really is weird about this issue is it being very intermittent. I took it out a couple hours ago and about every 1 out of 3 times it won't shift, the other two it will. =\

You guys need to move the air valve down to the RAM mounted directly on the RAM with a eight inch pipe 90. the problem is when the air valve opens. It has to pressurize that small line always down to the RAM, and that takes time. If the air valve is mounted directly to the RAM, when the valve opens, the pressure is already right there. I'm only running 90 pounds of pressure, and it never misses a shift, unless it spins. the first time I put one of these systems together. I mounted the air valve under the seat, and had the same problem a lot midst shifts. As soon as I mounted it directly to the RAM. I never had any more problems. Check out Lucky's post about installing an air shifter.

Moved mine some time ago and like you said it works great ... I was telling 08smokes to do the same ..

08 smokes maybe this will help .. You see where i have my spring on the upper ram mount .. The way you have yours may be binding your ram ..

Okay so we didn't move the air valve (yet), but we did adjust the shifter and it seems to have fixed the problem- not a single missed shift in any gear just going moderately on the throttle around town.
We did have to bend the shifter away from the bike slighty because it was hitting that plastic piece shown that covers the kickstand spring. Thank you to everyone who posted in this thread and especially smokin14 for the detailed explainations and pictures.

Those cycle tech rams have 3" of travel? the mps stickered one I got with all the other used stuff I bought only has 2".
