Bye bye cam chain clatter.
The cam chain clatter has been getting progressively worse on the Monster 14 and it finally got to the point that Dave (mechanic and jockey for the bike) said "enough already". He searched and found someone that had a modified zx12 tensioner available to ship immediately (Carpenter), ordered and paid for it. It's sure great to have other people (Dave and Sam) helping out like this as I honestly can not afford to keep all the bikes running by myself. Thanks Dave for everything. None of what we're doing would be possible without your contributions.

Technically, if you look at the R or the 14's tensioner design, they both use the same wire locking setup. The simple trick is to tighten the wire wind around the ratchet. Remove the wire ring from the ratchet rod, carefully collapse the wire so it now hugs the ratchet more. I've heard no noise ever since setting the valves, needing to remove the cams. Now, it's routine procedure I have that tensioner out for some reason?

We sell alot of our machined ZX12r tensioners. They eliminate the clatter on startup and keep tension even at low RPM's.
We even run them with the big cams and springs on our stage 3 cnc ported heads for several years now without any issues.

Sorta sucks you gotta go backwards to get a decent cct for the 14. Is the 14r's cct a better design & adaptable to gen1 or the same old crap?

Not again! You spend $9000 on a KTM/Husaberg dirt bike and it's almost mandatory to spend another $90 on a dirt tricks cam chain tensioner. I'm going to have to do the same mod on my new 14r?

Dave installed the new cam chain tensioner and not a peep from the cam chain now. Wow, it's like a whole new bike. Recommend this to any 14 owner.

took about 10 mins to swap out, and all that ugly noise gone completely. no sign of it at all even at first start.

what noise where you hearing,was it a fluttering sound when you rev'ved it up,reason I am asking is because i'm getting a noise like that from my bike.

that rattle you get when you first start it. well our began only at startup, then would do it at the shut down, then progressed to just randomly doing it anytime. would have to shut it off, and fire right back up for it to stop. (knew that wasnt good sign)

Your ears are "Ringing" Big Guy... Jim @ CNC did sell me a nice looking one that I sold to Shane661. I never did install it , as my 2007 14 never got a ticking sound for long on start up cold and only for a spilt second. Just long enough with my helmet off I could hear it,... then gone. One of the members here used the stock CCT and drilled and tapped it and made a "Manual" adjuster like a A.P.E. Jim Modded CCT is the way I would go, the manual you have to adjust when you change the oil. Jim's you never touch it, spring loaded. I thought the new 2012 was a different design then the older 14?????

The Ape is a manual tensioner, meaning you have to adjust it vs. the zx12/14 tensioners that are hydraulic & are self tensioning,at least till they quit. I've got the Ape & it works great also, no noise on start up & haven't had to adjust it since it's initial install over a year ago & at least 12k miles,

The ZX12 Jim mods is "Spring" loaded only if I remeber correctly. Cool the chain has not stretched enough to have to adjust it.When it time to adjust do you do it with engine running at idle running by ear or engine off dead static????

Initially I set it per the instructions so it isn't too loose then I set it with the engine running, I back it out just enough to hear it start rattling & then turn it in just enough to stop the rattle & lock it down there. This is the same method we always used on older bikes that came with manual tensioners back in the day. I thought the zx12 was hydraulic but the indexing spring on it didn't allow it to back off as far as the 14 because of finer indexes thereby stopping or lessening rattle on start up. But I haven't seen one so it's only what I read here in the past.
