Carpenter Racing, you have to call as they don't list them but they're in all their builds. Around $150 I think. I went with an Ape & have had no problems since.

how good are the instructions with it? hear if it isnt exact they can cause big issues. capenter says they dont have any and have to find one to make it, and may be next week. had a trip planned for this weekend, and tryin to find solution.

I know a lot of zx14 owners are using the APE manual tensioner with success but Jim @ Competition CNC told me of a few horror stories where it was adjusted incorrectly causing catastrophic engine failure. Just can't take that chance. Gotta get that zx12 one as it's supposed to be foolproof.

Going with this one but just don't think it'll happen in time to make a big race this weekend that Dave wants to go to. The stock tensioner has bad issues now.

The Ape tensioner is easy to install & won't allow the chain to go slack when you let off the throttle suddenly at high revs like an hydraulic unit can. I'd imagine any damage caused was by over tightening the tensioner which they warn you about in the install specs. Been using mine for over 12k without having to readjust it.

That is exactly what Jim spoke of and the ensuing damage caused by it. Scared me. But like I mentioned, I know a lot of you are using it with no issues whatsoever.

I followed their tension instructions but modified them by starting the motor after adjusting & backing out the adjustment until it just started to rattle then slowly tightening again until the rattle stopped & locked it down. This way I know it's not too tight. Seems to work fine as I haven't had to readjust & still doesn't rattle. The weirdest part was not having that stupid rattle on start up, took ahwile to get used that.

Does the APE manual tensioner get rid of the 'startup' rattle, or do you have to use a zx14 hydraulic tensioner to get rid of that noise?

You are right, that does seem like the best way to do it. But did install the zx12 tensioner, and yes it is weird to not hear that initial rattle.
