08 14 won't start, leaking oil

Ok, so, I took a little road trip on my bike, and after 2 hours I pulled into a gas station to stretch my legs a bit. Got back on, started it, put it in gear, revved it just a little bit, then pop. I felt, more than heard due to wearing headphones, a "clunk", and some smoke came up from the exhaust. I tried to start it, but it wouldn't turn over. Oil started leaking out, very slowly, dripping onto the left side lower fairing and running out. After I got it back to the house I pulled the side fairings off, just to try to see if i could see a hole in the block from a possible thrown rod or anything, and couldn't find anything. I can't tell where the oil is coming from at all.

On the road for the time leading up to when the motor quit, I didn't have the slightest hiccup from it. I wasnt beating on it at all, temp was fine, I didn't get over 90-95 mph and was cruising between 70 and 80 most of the ride. Shit, I don't think i pushed it past 6k rpm.

I had a friend of mine tell me about pretty much the same problem that a friend of his encountered, and it ended up being a "clutch rod" that broke. Does this sound like a possible issue for my bike? I just can't figure it out, and its frustrating the hell out of me.

Has anyone had a similar problem or have any suggestions?

uh..you can pull the sprocket cover off to check the "clutch rod" if you want to start there.

Lights? Indicators? FI lights? Batt Voltage?

Don't think it's the clutch ...I have never heard of a zx14 breaking a clutch rod ... Does the clutch still have feel to it ? If it does then there is nothing wrong with it .. If the rod broke the lever would have no feel to it .. There has been a few gen 1 zx14s have lost number 3 rod ( spun bearing ) very few have ever tossed a rod out of the cases, but it is posssible .. Oil leaks from the valve cover gasket have been a problem for a few ZX14 with higher mileage .. Most times you see it first on the left side while on the side stand .. That is an easy fix .. If it were me i would drain the oil and look for gold flakes , silver flakes .. If you see a bunch crap in the oil you most likely spun a rod bearing .. It is rare but it can happen ..

The oil is clean. The valve cover gasket leaking wouldn't cause the bike not to start though, would it?

When was the last oil change? New cut pan? Check your air box for oil.

Pull the Plugs, look for a broken or smashed plug gap, if none, try spining over if it spits out fuel , could be stuck injestor, causing it to hydralic or. If it won't spin, I be thinking a Broken Rod or Piston ?? Pull off ignition cover and get on crank bolt and try to rock crank back and forth like 1 inch to see if you can unlock.
Pull Valve cover and look for Bucket stuck down or big clearances between cam and buckets, if so , got bent Valves !!

May sound dumb but did you have enough oil? I knew someone who locked their engine from low oil. sounds like you got something internal wrong for your bike to not even turn over. Like members mentioned before maybe a valve or bearing. I was possibly thinking timing chain related. Maybe it broke and got jammed. Not sure if these engines are non interference or not.

Check the easy stuff before you go breaking into your engine. Maybe youll find.the problem so you wont have to tear into the engine so much

The oil level was fine. I just changed it, probably not even 500 miles ago. That's what I'm hoping for though, hopefully its something simple.

Does anyone have a quick easy way to remove the tank? Just looking for a quick easy way to get it off and not lose a whole lot of fuel. I mean, I know I'm going to lose some taking it off, but I'd like to keep it to a minimum lol. I've had the tank off before, but I drained it because I was painting it so I wasn't worried about losing fuel. I'm gonna get the bike to the point that I can work on parts of the motor without pulling it. If I end up having to pull the motor I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Just downloaded the pdf repair manual that you guys have posted, Its gonna help a hell of a lot. Thanks for all the input though, guys. I really appreciate it.

One other question, what exactly is the FI error? What does it mean?

Fuel injection self diagnostic error codes are shown at LCD screen. So if theres any, you should see big FI warning txt on display.
Theres also warning lamp top left at the dash.

Ok, update. I've been pretty busy and haven't had a lot of time to work ok the bike, but I got the tank pulled last night. The airbox is full, and I mean FULL, of oil. Any further ideas? I'm just trying to explore all the options I can before I resort to pulling the motor.

Nevermind the previous post. Upon further investigation, there's a hole in the block. FML. Time for a new motor. Anyone have one for sale?

I know its a little late, but could you give us your mileage and year of bike? And it sounds like it might be a thrown rod right? Its just good to have the info out there for folks. I'm guessing its an 06-07?
