help! no start/hard start 06 14
hey guys, new to the site though I have been lurking for a bit. My name is Sterling and I live in BC, Canada. Any ways onto my problem. yesterday morning I go to hop on my 14 and she doesn't fire up. When I hit the start button she would crank but wouldn't catch and the little red dash light would flash with each crank. tried it a couple more times, same result. key off, key on try again same result. key off let it sit for two minutes and then she fired up like normal. I went to put air in the tire. shut her down and went through a similar process to start her again but this time when she fired up there was a clattering sound for a couple seconds that came from what sounded like the top end. when I got home she fired up five or six times no issue. was super busy yesterday so haven't touched her since... any ideas? thanks in advance gurus

checked battery wiring. removed negative terminal and reconnected it. i have a wiseco fuel controller not a pc... don't really know much about it as it came with the bike. all the wires on the fuel controller go to a harness on the left side of the frame kind of under the tank. can I unplug this harness without risking damage when running the bike(never had a piggy back fuel controller before). when I tried to start it it did the same thing as yesterday. after re connecting the battery it would start but now when I turn the key to on (yes the fuel pump primes) i hear a noise i did not hear before. sounds kind of like a servo or small electric motor (difficult sound to explain) in the bottom of the gas tank /throttle body region. as well when I shut the bike off I hear what sounds like a relay clicking.coming from the tail (this noise may have been present before as I first noticed it with the seat off). the only thing I have changed recently is the battery, I installed a shorai. Thanks again guys

So eveything checks out so far. Next is fire to your plugs. Your prolly getting fuel but now you need spark to ignite. Check your coils... Possibly a sensor like crankshaft sensor or similar. When I get off tonight ill look in the service manual.

thanks venomous, don't have one of those yet:-$ any info on how to test the coils would be awesome as I was planning on doing this anyway. I have been experiencing a mild miss when decelerating and at idle (more pronounced.when warming up) maybe these issues are related. I should have mentioned that from the start.

The tip over sensor would not allow the bike to even crank over. I just pull the coil out and put a plug in it and put plug near metal and tap starter. You should see it arc and hear it tick everytime it sparks. Its a crude method but works. Use at your indescretion.
I never had problems doing it. Be careful is all im saying

anybody know how to test the coils with a multimeter? I'm sure your method works venomous but I'll feel a lot better about it if I have a specific range to test a measured resistance against... Seems more fool(me) proof.

I wouldn't worry about the rattling coming from the top in, a lot of the older models, rattle own start up because of a weak hydraulic timing chain adjuster. I don't think the problem is in your coils, I would be suspicious of this piggyback fuel injector "wiseco fuel controller" I have no ideal how it plugs in, but the PCs plugged in right under the fuel injectors. Just over the starter motor, I don't know if this is the case, but I would be trying to go around this unit First, to eliminate it.

before you even go through all that trouble...what was the voltage reading given from the bike with the key on? with the bike running does the system show its charging? If the 14 doesnt see a certain voltage it will NOT run...was the battery you took out even bad to begin with?
Back to the basics here...if you didnt have this problem before the battery change then thats your problem.

13.something key on. 14.2 while running. my previous battery was shot and I've had this one in for a couple weeks. my bike has 45 000 kilometers on her, when those cam chain tensioners go can they cause starting/running issues? how long do they usually last?

A friend of mine had silmilar issues with his 6r....he found out the in tank fuel filter was clogged. He cleaned it & everything is good now. Was there ever an aftermarket kill switch installed for a lanyard? Bad wiring there could be killing your spark.

Resistance of the primary coil should be 1.2~1.6 ohms measured between the contacts you see when you pull the connector out of the coil.
Resistance of the secondary coil should be 8.5 ~11.5 Kohms measured between the contact to the right as you are looking at the connector of the coil and the spark plug connection.
Hope this helps.

Correction.... on the secondary coil, it's the contact on the left of the connector and the spark plug connection.
Sorry for the confusion.
