Perth Dyno Day - how did Greggy's 2012 ZX-14R hold up against some tough competition?
Hey Guys!!!!
I thought I would share some dyno results conducted today which included my 2012 ZX-14R, a 2011 ZX-10R and a BMW S1000RR. It was a very hot day here in Perth Western Australia, the conditions were fairly ordinary, but here are the top three results (rounded to the nearest 0.5HP) for you to ponder...
1st place - 2010 BMW S1000RR, stock motor, PCV, Akrapovic titanium muffler - 174.5 HP
2nd place - 2012 ZX-14R, stock motor, dual TB carbon mufflers - 173.0 HP (my bike)
3rd place - 2011 ZX-10R, stock motor, Akrapovic titanium muffler- 171.5 HP
The dyno machine was a Dynojet and the ambient conditions were outside temp 38C/100.4F , dyno room temp 35C/95.0F and humidity was 33%. All rear wheel HP figures are SAE with a smoothing value of "5".
I'm still waiting for the dyno operator to email me the dyno sheets and I will post these pictures as soon as I have them, but I thought you guys would enjoy this 'sneak preview'. I'm not sure if I should be happy or sad about my bike's result (2nd place) but at least its in fairly good company!!!
What was interesting was that a very nice looking blue 2007 Busa 'only' made 147 HP and a 2007 ZX-10R with carbon mufflers made 145HP.

Interesting. The numbers seem well low (Even considering high temp and humidity.), but consistency is the key for comparison. Cool.
Thanks.

Greggy did you take any pics of the bike on the dyno ?
print of dyno sheet should show it but i'm wondering with the 3 bikes so close if they were not pulling them down enough and getting wheelslip

I'll post the dyno print-outs when I can, but I know the HP graph for my bike levelled off quite flat for the upper part of the run (more than I would have expected) like it was running into some kind of upper limit. Perhaps I have a below average HP bike, or maybe tyre-slip, or something else was a factor?
My bike has 1,700Kms (1,050miles) from new, first service was done at 1,000Kms using fresh 10W40 mineral oil. I'll switch to ful synthetic 10W40 in another 1000Kms or so.
I also forgot to turn off TC for the dyno runs but not sure that would make any difference to the results. It certainly upset something as an error LED was flashing on the dashboard at the end of testing

Most of the 14 R's that have posted were 189, 190 hp completely Stock, 35* to 70* F temps
Yours tested @ 100* F, 33% humidy = 2965 ft, 91% correction
190 Hp x .91 % = 173 Hp @ 100* F,
Test it when its 50* F and Low humidy, you be 190 +

So how does that work out for HP for BMW?
Are you saying that the BMW will produce more as well, as the 10?

I think thats exactly what he is saying.
The BMW S1000RR (and the 2011 ZX-10R for that matter) are certainly not short of HP, but they both require a fair bit more RPMs to acheive the same HP numbers as our 14R's.

Those BMW's are like the David Copperfield of the dyno. It doesn't seem to matter what the latest or greatest or modded bike puts out, they always seem to magically put out just a BIT more You put a turbo bike that makes 300hp on a dyno and that pesky little beemer would make 301
Actually though they're just stout little suns a bitches. I still expected the new 14 to put out at least a few more ponies then the beemer?
Is anybody ever going to put out a bike with more power than the BMW?
BMW really did do an original busa number on the competition.

Don't see that it matters it takes more rpm to get that hp, they still get it.

In the real world of the street I have run to BMW S1000s and beat both of them quite easily and one of them was 100 pounds lighter overall than me and my bike!

If a BMW S1000RR or a ZX-10R isn't in the right gear, our 14's should smoke them fairly easily.

Interesting numbers...The TC on makes me wonder....To me it wouldn't matter if the BMW beat it by 1.5 hp or even if it was 10 hp...The BMW isn't going to have that any gear any rpm thrust of the 14...So it gets more hp with extra rpm, what's the difference at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 thousand rpm ? IMHO it's that quality that would make the zx14 a more enjoyable motor...Relaxed and effortless then thrust when ever you want it without having to scream the engine and good thrust at times that you want to stay within the boundaries of the speed limit.

If you didn't have the TC off, you were way down on hp....
Your front wheel was stopped while the rear was turning. Full TC and power limiting in effect...my bike would pop/sputter when we forgot to turn it off. Surprised Your dyno operator would run it that way.
TC on = HUGE difference, just to be clear.

That makes no sense. The dyno corrects for DA. His #'s are based upon an SAE correction factor. Uncorrected HP numbers are what will have the big variance.
His issue is the TC.

Interesting, I.m wondering if the TB exhaust hurt HP figures also..... With a choked up exhaust similiar to a noise reduction plug, that could hurt HP some.

I doubt it would b the new TB mufflers would it? According to TB themselves their slip-on mufflers actually add more HP, as per
http://www.twobros.com/Cust_Service/Dyno_Charts/dyno_2012_kaw_zx14r_SO.pdf
I completely forgot about the TC, and the dyno operator said it was the first 2012 ZX-14R he had put on the dyno so he probably didn't realise to turn it off either. I'll have to have another go one day with the TC off and see what difference that makes. Sh1t happens.

My bike flipped out when I left the tc on, completly stopped pulling about 9500 rpm, but when u look at the graph it was all over the place compared to the runs without.

Ok guys here's the Dyno chart
Note: even though the temp is shown as 30C on the print out, it was 35 according to the operator. It was 38C or more outside in the shade FFS!!!

It does look like a very lazy 14R to me Maybe I took it too easy during the run-in?

Anyone have a non tc printout for comparison ?
i think the power doesn't rise like it should above 8 k,
Go see Brett at Tokyomotorsport in Welshpool he runs the bike side of business , will get the tuneup sorted for the pipes and get you a real number

Please read what I wrote above. The temps have nothing to do with it, that is what correction factors are for. Take it back with TC off. And make sure it is in full power mode as well. Set the rear tire at 33 psi and make sure they strap it down.
