Californians, 2012 is the last model year you can mod exhaust, get them while they're hot!
Remember all our california members, as of the 2013 model year you will no longer be able to run any exhaust but the stocker on your bike, thanks to ex-govenor Terminator. If a cop thinks your bike is a 2013 or newer, or you get pulled over for something else, you'll get a ticket. Plus I believe each ticket gets substantially bigger till the third, then its license pulling time I can't imagine having to run those gigantic exhausts on my 2013 ZX14R forever. I noticed a HUGE difference in my handling and performance by dropping the stock anchors off my 07, and the 14R has even bigger, heavier exhausts to meet EPA standards while still allowing that big power. Maybe some companies like yoshi will make lightweight slip-ons that meet EPA regs while still dumping a ton of weight. I'm glad I don't live in cali though
I'm sure its just a matter of time before the disease spreads to other states

What sucks is when you are in the military and you have to live there for six years. Now my kids will be back their with the soon to be ex-wife, so it looks like I will have to get stationed there again just to be closer to them, yay me!

Sorry man you didn't marry a californian did you? Arr Arr j/k. There will be a work around like some clone pipes or just put a turbo with stock pipes welded on like I saw someone did.

We are not exactly a part of the old "USA", but rather, a section known as "The People's Republic of California". Coincidentally, the vehicle I have owned the longest in my 41 years of age, the totally customized 2006 ZX14 Wolverine Machine, sold to a new owner on Sunday. But now, I'm thinking the 2012 ZX14 is the bike to own.....as long as MJ's post is legit. Being a resident of the people's republic of Ca, I'd like to see a factual link backing up this bad news.....

I understand you wanting valid proof. Bikeland covered the story a year ago or so when it was put into law...a search here will bring it up....and we had a TON of threads on it. Or google it and you'll find it almost instantly I'd imagine. Here I googled it for you http://www.ultimatemotorcycling.com/new-california-motorcycle-exhaust-law and here's the whole google search http://www.google.com/search?q=new+california+motorcycle+exhaust+law&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1
I just put up the reminder because I knew a lot of folks would have forgotten, and figured it might help some cali folks decide to purchase that new bike this year and beat the system, instead of waiting for the 2013 models, THEN finding out. I do know that yoshi already makes some EPA legal pipes for cali bikes, not big hp gains but big weight loss. I imagine they'll do something like that for the 14...I would hope anyway?
Cali isn't emmissions testing bikes, just visual inspections for EPA stamped exhausts, which so far for most bikes is only the stock system Anything 2012 and back can run a different exhaust as long as its not loud enough for the officer to decide you need a ticket for it..(but this is still a grey area)..which means it reality it would have to be as quite as a stock system decibel wise. Thats going to be up to the officers discretion. But soundwise thats the case in most states, its just that cali has now made it mandatory that 2013 and up MUST run a stock system or something that meets the same EPA regs and has the stamp, which no aftermarket exhausts or slip-ons have as of now.
Cali's only one state, but maybe someone like yoshi will think its a big enough market to make some compliant systems for some models? I do know that this will open up a new can of worms in cali, because by federal law (even though its never been enforced strictly) its actually been illegal to modify your exhaust since 1982 in all states I believe? So I'm not sure how how all the ticketing could shake out? If you rode quiet-like around cops and kept a low profile, you might be able to run a modded exhaust on your 2013 and get by, who knows?
Then again they might tell you the Brocks on your 2012 has to come off...sounds like its going to be officers discretion on a lot of this.
If I lived in cali and was thinking about a new bike, I would make the purchase now for a 2012 though.
I still think they're going to be focusing mostly on the 2013 and up models.

Thanks MJ
Damn, these laws are crazy....I had heard about this 2013 one as well but had not heard about it for some time so I was wishfully thinking maybe it had gone away. So if I understand correctly, it is illegal to tamper with any exhaust in CA, but starting in 2013, it is EXTRA illegal to tamper with the exhaust....? Furthermore, an officer cannot pull over a bike he suspects is post-2012 and running aftermarket exhaust. . . . that has to be discovered as a secondary infraction.....good grief, these laws are so damn stupid (but still gives me a reason to go shopping for something shiny and new, I guess....lol)
