no ethanol premium = real gas
I thought my bike was getting a little boring in the hp department maybe time to get a new R. I remember when it was new about 4-5 years ago it used to wheelie all the time but not so much lately. I know its winter and some of the fuel in the bike may be old because only ride every other week or so but I have run the tank all the way down a few times. Today I was out in the general vicinity of a station that carries 92 octane no ethanol fuel so I filled up. Before this the bike was bogging a little in second at part throttle which I don't remember it doing. Well suddenly it starts to feel perky wait a minute it feels real perky. Pretty soon its hitting 100 without even trying hey that's more like it. I don't think I had old gas or particularly bad gas as most of the refills lately seem about the same - dull. I think maybe we're being duped by oil companies and not getting our btus like we're supposed to, gov't probably looks the other way on fuel testing. Probably selling us crappy enough gas so its not that noticeable especially over time. Now it revs clean and hard very noticeable. Anybody else notice poorer performance than it used to be? I always run 89 if that matters.

I use to wheelie a little from 1-2 shift at the track. It hasn't done it in a while.

I work for a major oil refinery, and I can say from experience that the fuels we produce are meticulously lab tested for everything, such as octane, sulfur content, water content, you name it. Any fuel that fails lab tests is sent to bad tankage, and re-run through the refinery to make it right.
What happens beyond our fencelines are out of our control, such as storage at gas stations, pipeline contamination, not to mention alot of fuel is shipped out via barges.
The fuels are also tested by federal and state agencies to assure quality.
Only speaking on what I know happens at our facility, can't promise that happens everywhere else though.

Interesting to know ninjaboy who knows what it is but wow I thought I needed a injector cleaning or air filter or something. I'll have to try 10% again partly because the other station is too far.

I can agree with you that it makes more power with 100% gas. I experienced the same when I had my ZX-14. Its something about the ethanol, not the quality of the fuel as a whole.

I have a little 112 octane in my bike right now. ...after I run two tanks full of 93 octane through, I will try the 100% gas to see if it makes a difference in my bike.

I'm an ethanol hater. Unfortunately, you can't find gas w/o it around here. Not readily available and at a reasonable price, anyway. Shame...I'll go to some kind of ethanol stabilizer/neutralizer, I reckon. Any ideas?

CLS,,,,,,, there is a product call "startron" that negates the effects of ethanol in fuel. It does work from my experience.

Anybody done any dyno testing back to back with these fuels ? I would really like to know if i'm giving up any power by using pump gas with 10% ethanol .. I have a Gas station just down the street that sells Non ethanol fuel and don't mind paying a little extra if there is HP to be had ..

Try some then? Only a few cents more...i was sure u were running 100% fuel..interesting to know ur running the E10 stuff...

Lucas Oil has a product very similar to the Startron. I picked some up the other day @ Autozone, 16oz for $9.99, treats 80 gallons of fuel.
Also, Lucas Oil Fuel Stabilizer is superior to Stabil in my experience. I have had nothing but problems with that Stabil.

Roy after watching you Rich at the track trying to tune with E85 I'll pass on it .. I want to ride my bike not spend all night on my lap top .. The question was has anyone done back to back testing of this fuels listed above, NOT E85 ..

We cant get anything but ethanol gas here at all. My bike has not run the same numbers since it was mandated.

The engineers at the refinery I work for say ethanol free gas is 2-3% more horsepower.

i wasnt suggesting that you run E85,,, i just thought it was amusing that the e85 and ethanol free were side by side ....
after all , it is a small independent station ,,, how much can you trust them :-)

I think you know why i asked , i'm so close to running a 8.40s pass i'm thinking this might give me a few extra HP.. Brock said in one of his videos he made the best power off 89 shell .. My guess it is 10% ethanol in the shell 89 .. Maybe not because it's winter blend sold in Ohio ?

Ethanol gas is mandated to be sold in our end of Texas but we make gasoline at my plant that is sold as ethanol free gasoline in the northeast US, none of it is sold in the south. And no, I cant bring any of it home with me dammit. I know Shell was the last brand to go ethanol around here. I will be using Shell from now on and it was Shell 89 eth. free that gave me my best numbers too a couple yrs ago.

Your new untuned R I believe you haven't messed with the mixture yet as in dyno tune, right Smokin? You figure these bikes are tuned from factory for reg non ethanol gas. Ethanol gas has 5 % less btu so without tuning for it with more fuel the bike should be down on power.
