chain slack and stretched
i was wondering if the manufactures chain slack recommendation still holds true once you start stretching the bike.
On the 14R i believe the recommendation is 1-1.2 inches, right now i have it on the low end with my slack set just below and 1". If i go over a bump or grab the throttle while slowing down i can hear the chain slack, or at least what seams to me from the sound, slapping the chain guard.

well in your professional opinion whats the least amount of slack you would run? and would there be a need to adjust between track and street?

It depends on how low your bike is, or where your rear axle sits vs the front pivot point of the swingarm.
As you can see in smokins pic, his rear axle is still below the swingarm pivot. That means if the bike square more, his chain is going to get more slack in it before it gets tighter.
Some bikes are set up so that the rear axle is just about flush with the swingarm pivot, which means they shouldnt get as much slack in the chain.

For street and track i would shoot for 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch .. Keep in mind i don't weight that much either ... .. remember as the bike goes down in the rear it the chain gets tighter .. Best to set your chain slack with you seated on the bike ... Have a buddy check it while you are setting on it ..

Lee, wouldnt it be the more the bike squats, the looser the chain gets until your rear axle is level with the swingarm pivot?

If the swing arm is level and then squats it will get more slack in the chain ... If the swing arm at the rear axle is lower than the frame bolt in the front of the swing arm it will get tighter as it squats .. Take a stock ZX14 and add lowering links and the chain will get very tight .. Every time i drop someone bike for them i have to reset the chain loser ... That why i said for him to sit on the bike and check the chain slack .. I don't know how his bike is set up or what he weighs ...

No i'm not saying you are wrong .. What i'm saying is it depends on the set up and weight of the rider .. That is why i wanted him to sit on the bike and check it ...

If your axle bolt is close to level with your pivot bolt than you aren't gonna want hardly any slack in the chain at all because when you sit down or launch you gonna be past the point where your chain will tighten due to swingarm movement, thats why I put a wheel kit on my busa so the chain wouldn't be slopping around so much. If your axle bolt is below your swingarm pivot bolt than like Lee said try to squat the suspension to adjust so the chain isn't too tight under most driving or launching conditions. Alot depends on what kind of riding your doing also, You can usually hear a chain that is too tight just doesn't sound right when under load and that stress isn't good for seals and your output shaft. If you have underbracing a wheel kit is a nice addition.
