Is this what DOT 5 looks like?

Recently got this 05 zx-10 for my track days adventures this year and I saw the fron brake reservoir needs a little refill and possibly a flush but when I opened the cap I saw this:

This DOT 5?

I got in touch with the previous owner and he said it's DOT 5. I actually went as far as mixing couple of drops of the stuff with some DOT 4 I had laying around and it looked like oil in water for a moment.

Dot 5 is usually purple and is NOT compatible with either Dot 3 or Dot 4 and should never be mixed due to its chemical properties. DOT5 does not absorb moisture and holds the highest boiling point. It damages pain quickly also...

Never seen but have participated in several convos online about DOT 5 and always been told it is indeed purple. Yours is prolly fresh or it would be brown from the yellowing that takes place after some use.

BTW, the aforementioned convos often dealt with the 14's tendency to leak DOT 5 from the seals. I have always used Valvoline DOT 3 and 4 for the 14. ..........(edit) but I see you were talking about a ZX-10 so may be designed to take the higher temp DOT5.

The guys who used it in ZX-14 brake systems also had no trouble but some reported seeing leakage eventually. I'd just keep an eye on it----'specially if you are finding need to add to the reservoir. JMHO, never needed to add any hydrolic to either my busa or 14 except for bleeding the brakes.

I fucked up my edit, thanks for catching it... Dot 3 and 4 damage paint quickly, unlike dot 5 which does not

Dot 5 is full syn brake fluid ... DO NOT mix it with Dot 3 or 4 .. Because it's syn it will not harm the paint .. Dot 5 does have problems with some of the rubber seal that comes from China ... Bad part is most now use seals from China ...
