I agree, if you are not going to adjust them yourself. There are alot of shops out there they will say they did it; you really won't know if they did it or not, unless the valves are too tight and you have a loss of compression. If your bike is running good, you won't be able to determine if it was done or not..... They will charge you for actually removing the cams and changing out shims... but won't give you the shims they removed.....

I can change oil and adjust a chain, change an air filter, install a PC--normal stuff. No internal engine wrenching until i did the valve adjustment. Long story short----took at least 60 hours to do the work and thoroughly understand the process. I ended up adjusting one too tight and had to go back and redo it.

I would guess that your valves are still in spec at 15K. I only had 1 that really was really a concern at 30K. You could do the valve clearance check and in all likelihood, that would be all you need to do.

Taking out the camshafts, reinstalling and keeping the timing is crucial. Screw that up the motor is toast. I have a lot of pics and even quite a bit of pictorials with text I can give you links to....if you want to do this. I'm actually really close to finishing all the write ups soi that may be all you need----if you have the time and inclination. My bike was out for almost the whole summer and most of the fall. sucked. but I know it was done and I know when to check it again and it will be a lot easier next time.

If you are not really into wrenching, I would suggest letting a trusted shop do the job. YOU tell them you NEED to see the open head and see the clearances checked with a feeler gauge before ANY adjustment is made. No way they can gyp you if they do that ---if the feeler won't slide right through, it is out of spec. Tell them you also want to see the same process after the adjustment (if it needs it). The blade should slide right through or the valve clearance is not adjusted. They might think you are a PITA but if you throw in a few extra $$$ be worth your peace of mind IMO.

We can do it for you ..I should say i can do it for you at the new shop ....Call Ryan at Docs Cycle Worx 727 776 0575 .. The cost is not that bad to check them , but it gets costly if they need adjustments ( reshiming ) because the cams have to come out .. Figure in a new valve cover gasket .. It crazy not to change it while it's all apart ..
Tell Ryan that Lee to told you to call ..

+1, definitely change. Mine leaked before the adjustment and still leaks after torqueing---even put the washers in there under the bolts. Next time I will just go ahead and replace the gasket and the rubber ring-os on top of the cover. ~$4 for all six. change 'em IMHO.

The gasket and the ring-os are an updated part. if your bike is 2006-08, you have the older ones that tend to allow head cover leak eventually.

unless you have alot of patience this is a task I wouldn't recommend someone doing for the first time, there isn't a whole lot of room to work in there, at our dealership none of the other techs even want to do a valve adjustment on a 12r or 14's they ask me to do them. Because for them they are at flat rate, hard to make time on I get payed hourly because it's only a part time gig for the parts discount. After you have done it once you know what to expect not impossible just be patient

thanks for the replies, I don't have the tools or expertise so I need to rely on others. Rook's reply certainly proves that.
