Guhl Treatment

Am wondering if this same modification can be installed on the ZX14 previous to the new 2012 Models?

What is the cost for the modification?

What is the turn around time?

This really sounds like a simple way to improve the breed on this new fantastic machine!

Yes, Guhl can reflash the '06-'11 ECU's. We have one that has the speed limiter removed and +400 rpm added. I believe the cost is $375. Turnaround time has been 1 day for us.

http://www.guhlmotors.com

At any rate, it is a fairly "elegant" solution. It keeps you from having to add extra modules, TRE's, derestrictors, etc. I am not great with electronics, so if I can have it all done for me, and in the stock ecu, that is my preference.

Sounds like a quick easy to increase the output of this already wonderful engine and let it operate where it really was designed to run....not be stuck at the 186 mph regulated limit.

I've been reading this thread with great interest. Here in the UK we don't get our bikes until the end of the month, so read is all I can do at the moment. Does anyone know if Ghul Motors will be able to reflash ecu's for customers outside of the USA?

You guys could email Don...that would be the best way to give him the specifics of your needs:

johnbull,
You are a custom application and would need to speak directly to Don: sales@guhlmotors.com

I should be updating him on my ecu testing progress next week, and will try to remember to ask. But again, I would suggest shooting him an email.

Brock already did that, a page or two back...

Hey Guys,

Here is a proper test of Don's ECU:

The weather is fantastic, hence our .99 SAE correction factor and the 194 base power reading. But it only took 3 minutes for me to plug the ECU in and retest.

I agree 100%, that's why I am going to wait until Flash Tune has them (which they are currently working on) they charge $50-$150, or ECU unleashed which is in the same ballpark as Guhl. Someone has to spend some time coding and working at this solution but the price seems very high considering once the files are created you basically plug the ECU in and transfer the new file. I can understand charging $375 if there is a big increase in HP & TQ, for example the ECU unleashed solution for the ZX-10 which gives 15HP with just the ECU flash.

Basically, the current setup does what a TRE (flies), Ignition Module with rev extend (as far as increased rpm), and a speed deristrictor accomplishes. There is also a little timing advance which probably accounts for the slight hp increase. Without error codes, extra wiring, affecting traction control, gear indicator, etc.. As I mentioned before, there are also other options available for the limiters, etc, for nitrous apps. These services are available now, which is fairly early on in the development process.

I know that Don will continue working with the ecu, so we will see what that brings. I am anxious to do more tuning to see how much power I can carry to the new limiter, it looks promising.

Yes it does look quite promising, and everyone has said Guhl is great at what he does. I am concerned foremost with performance and price is secondary... You often do get what you pay for! Hopefully there will be a package which will include: HP and TQ increase, rpm limit extended, flies open earlier, timing advanced and speed restrictor eliminated.

EURO ECU INFO

For those who asked, I just called Guhl. They me told that it should be no problem to do a Euro Ecu, and they have done some 10R units in the past. They need to have a part #, and then obviously an actual ecu in hand in order to move forward.

Hope this helps.

Extending the redline to 11,500 rpm on standard 17/42 gearing gives around 210mph in 6th according to my calculations.

Excellent

Well, it is plug and play (you need to extend the ground wire)...but...

The throttle bodies had to come out, and that means taking a lot of stuff apart. There are some new pieces and parts that have to be removed compared to a Gen 1. I have some more pics, but have not had time to sort through them.

I had some issues yesterday, which seemed to be helped/fixed by upgrading to the latest software/firmware. I need to do some more testing.

Great writeup Shane. When I went to Brock's shop for the initial dyno run on my 2012 ZX-14R he is using for development and the new diary I talked to the two techs that installed the ZX-10 power commander. They did it with the TB's on the bike. Looking at the amount of room to work I don't see how they did it. Brock said if he had not had a set of long hemostats they could not have done it with the TB's on the bike.
