why is he using a brass punch and a mallet.. sledgehammer would be the tool of choice

The hammer and bronze rod is because they pulled the piston down to where the rings came out of the cylinder. So he is folding the rings into the piston and driving it out. also it looks like he mixed up the bearings. Should have saved some work and bought a salvage take out motor
