BST on a 2012 14R
What do you think the gains will be if you replace the stock wheel on a 14R with a set of BSTs?

Probably the same gains as on a gen 1 14.
At stock wheelbase, probably not much. Making the front end lighter isn't going to help.

I love the look of BST wheels but in my opinion that is the best reason for buying them, looks. Think about the hp you can get for a fraction of the cost for wheels. You can build and nasty engine and still put money in your pocket. I always like to point out Ronnie Mitchell's bikes, they run stock wheels on those things.

If some one wants to find out I would consider swapping my BST's for there 2012 zx 14r wheels and some cash. Actually give me your new wheels and 2500.00 and I send you the BST's with ceramic bearings and three gears a 41, 43, and a 45 that has 4 passes on it. that's a deal right there! wheels were made aug 2010 and never seen street us or sat out in sun besides at track.

what bikes? Rizzo has BSTs, Bayes 14 has BSTs, the Dtown hustler doesn't have stock wheels, casper didnt have stock wheels, roxanne didn't have stock wheels. I can't think of one RMR bike that has had stock wheels.

I have a set of PMs on my zx 10 and they really allow the bike to spin up quickly.
I changed the wheels on my 07 zx14. The rear wheel weighs 41 lbs(+/-) this is with everything mounted (rotors, hub, sprock 41 tooth, axle and spacer. I changed them with a set of 636 whees and went from 41 to 33.
That really made a difference. So, I guess no one has an idea of the gain?

If the new wheels are 3 lbs lighter, total, than the old ones, you will be looking at around 11 lbs of weight savings with the BST's. That includes cush drive assemblies and bearings.
quote: BST's are all about the weight. So, let's see what they weigh:
Front, with spacers:

6 lbs. 1 oz.
Rear, with spacers:

9 lbs. 4 oz.
Sprocket carrier:

1 lb. 13 oz.
Total rear, with sprocket carrier: 11 lbs. 1 oz.
Stock wheels:
Front 11.6 lbs.
Rear 19.5 lbs.
Weight savings over stock:
Front 5 lbs 9 oz.
Rear 8 lbs. 7 oz.
These numbers could be off by a few ounces, but you get the idea.
Shane
Without having weighed a set of the new wheels, it is just a guess....but I imagine it is pretty close.

That's not too bad at all 10lbs, my 07 spun up real quick, this bike should be a beast with BSTs.... the 07 had no where near the tq of the 14R.... they should be worth good 2 tenth

with the 14R, Kawi is claim 3 lbs lighter wheels... wonder are they refering to the rear wheel or 1.5 a piece?
Either way, 1.5 off 38lbs, depending on the tire....36.5 lbs; remove the o-rings from the chain, that should be a good HP gain.. Getting excited bout the wheel deal

Absolutely no way it will be worth 2 tenths. I would say that the average rider won't notice much difference at all.

mathews, I'm thinking there was something else acting as the bottleneck with your brother. what is the rule of thumb with wheel weight? effect is 3 or 4 times the actual weight savings? So that is a 30 to 40lb equivalent weight drop (and that's just the rear wheel). no way that isn't going to have some effect.

Maybe worth a couple of hundreths, but most bikes as fast as my brothers dont repeat well enough to notice.I am no hypocrite,if I could afford them I would have a set.But I would be willing to bet you can see the same decrease in ET and increase in trap speed by putting ceramic bearings in your stock wheels

on my 06 with stock wheels and bearings I went 1.45 60 foot and 9.18 at 150. on my 2010 with Bst's and ceramic bearings Ive been 9.02 average with a 1.37 60 foot at 149. i feel the wheels don't do shit or my 2010 don't run as good as my 06 did.

yeah I do imagine they are more of an "I've done almost everything I can" item in the hunt for peak performance due to the price. wonder if they do more for street vs drag racing.

Due to physics, the bike must accelerate more quickly with the BST's. As to how much that is, it depends on some setup factors as well. The difference in handling is huge, imo...and for street riders it will be very apparent. I found them to make my 64" bike turn surpisingly quickly on the street.
When it comes to light wheels, I just look at them as one part of a bigger picture. Light wheels save you 14 lbs of rotating weight. Combine that with an exhaust that saves you 27 lbs, lighter tires 3, a battery 9 lbs, etc, etc...it's the sum of all the changes.

The BST's are around 6-7 lbs lighter than the 06-07 10R wheels, depending on which brake rotors you use. The 08's wheels should be similar. There is more to it than just the weight, though. The oem wheels carry much more weight on the outside of the rim than the BST's do, and that is a bad place for the weight.
Sort of like an heavy old Shinko tire is not the best for mph....the weight is in the worst place.
I haven't seen a same-day test of the two setups, that would be interesting. But it would have to be done on the same bike, with the same tires's, gearing, and setup. And in the same conditions.

I am going to research the fourmula when changing unsprung weight. To say there is no difference is incorrect.
If you lose 10 lbs off your body, you will travel faster, because you are carring less weight.
If there was no difference, the cost would be alot less and no one would want to shave weight from their vheicles, yes cars included....

I have done alot of reading on this subject, mostly from car dudes... they believe that removing wheel weight or fly wheel has no difference in the acceleration of the vehicle when compared to just removing overal weight.
However, with MC it depends on where the heaviest wheel weight is located. With the mass being in the middle, and not on the outside of the wheel; there will be an increase in acceleration.
Now, what am I saying, weight reduction is weight reduction, because you are carring less weight, however for road racing, the gyro effect is alot lighter compared to your stock wheels. If I choose to mount the BST, change stock arm for chromemoly and drop stock exhaust.. .. the net weight loss will be close to 60lbs or so (41 on exhaust, 10 to 15 on wheel/tires)
I do believe the bike will have more wheel horse power with the lighter wheels, more wheel hp equate to a faster e.t..... now how much?
and roughly 5 to 7 on the swinarm)

Here is an older article with wheel comparisons, from Sport Rider magazine:

It discusses some of these aspects.
