- HID Help?? -

I don't know anything about HID lighting. I have a small light in a race fairing of another bike, it is just a tiny regular bulb. I was wondering if there is a small HID or something that I could put in the housing. Hacking up the back of the housing is not an issue, I just don't know the lighting tech.

Here is the light in question:

Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Shane

Being that the light housing looks to be entirely made of plastic (and it's rather small too) and HID lamp would not be recommended due to heat issues. I'd look into a high powered LED of some sort. What type of lamp does it normally come with?

Yes, the housing is plastic. So I take it that HID lights burn hot. It is a tiny bulb, I don't know the designation, but you can probably tell just from looking at it:

Maybe there is an LED bulb that will work. I know it won't light the road, but I want it as bright as possible for visibility. And, as I say, I don't mind modifying the back of the housing to take a different type of socket/bulb.

Nope, it's a 12R. The frames are similar.

Shane what bulb size is currently in the light housing? This will help decide if HID is possible, they only come in certain sizes.

How do I determine that? The Kaw microfiche only shows a part #, and this description:

BULB,12V 5W

As you can see in the photo, it is tiny. I was hoping to replace the bulb and socket with something a bit larger that might be brighter and run cooler?? I ccould even construct a new housing around the back, if need be.

Got it! Well, 1st off my memory off of the size of your bulb displayed looks like a 3157(part number) and is used regularly in automobiles. Using HIDS in exsisting housings can be a bit tricky due to the bulb length and it fitting in the current housing compartment.

If you are looking for a new, bigger, brighter lamp to install you can start with PIAA lights
http://www.piaa.com/Powersports/lamps.html

With your current lamp housing, the bulb you replace will only be so bright because you cannot apply HIDS but can apply LED lights(still only so bright and more of a cool factor)

Let me know if you have any more questions Shane. I've converted 2 automobiles and the ZX14 to HID and LED lights on every light application. They all look bad ass!

If you're really not worried about the projection put one of these lights In back of the one you have now installed.

I was kind of looking for something to get a littlemore street visibility and perhaps limit the amount of times I get pulled over in daylight hours, lol. But a light for the return road would be a good thing too. I saw some that were made for trail bikes, maybe clamp on?

I could always add a projector in the standard location, I suppose. Cutting a hole is easier than filling that other one!

Yeah man, doin' ok. Lots to do with the new house and all. Not riding very much. When it gets cooler out I'll make more time for PBIR.

The lamp looks like a 194 lamp. Typical bayonet base. I had put some 6K LED's on the makers of my 14 that are quite bright and something similar will do the trick for as well. Look for a forward firing (not radial) led and you'll be all set.

Beondwacko, one day I'll have to stop in and check it all out.

My one light I have on the motorcycle is so bright and hot The only way I can summon it up is this video.
