Street Machine
Ok, i know this has probably been beat to death but i need more.... Ive just about every bolt on that I can do and I need a edge since im a bigger guy. 196 naked. Im wanting a reliable all motor street bike. Im thinking either big bore or headwork, o/s valves n cams. Which would net me a better street bike to crush most gen 2's with bolt ons? Also as for the type of riding, just the occasional cruise to bike night that usually ends up ina race or now that Memphis Motorsports park is back open I will be visiting frequently. lol
I was looking at: from competitioncnc website,
ZX-14 STAGE 1 & STAGE 2 Std Size Valves
$600 CNC Porting
$250 Valve Job
$60 Resurface
$35 Valve Seals
$120 Shim Cams
$1,065
Options:
Cams $1,080
Springs and TI Retainers $360
ZX-14 STAGE 2 O/S Valves Medium Cams (under .400" lift)
$600 CNC Porting
$475 Bronze O/S Seats
$350 O/S Stainless Valves
$300 Valve Job
$1080 Cams (under .400" lift)
$360 Springs and TI Retainers
$60 Resurface
$35 Valve Seals
$120 Shim Cams
$3,500
what ya think? or would a big bore kit give me more? think I read that big bore for heavier riders due to needed torque and headwork cams etc for lighter riders as it gives you only top end

To run cams, you have to run aftermarket pistons.
To run the stage 2 head, or o/s valves, you pretty much have to run cams.
If you're wanting to save some money, get a supersport head, have him do some light porting on it (tell him what you're doing), and 47 mm throttle bodies. 200-210 rwhp. should be more then enough for you to outrun them pesky gen 2s

Yep, that sums it up.
The only thing about a SS head is that its milled a lot. so if you are ever planning to put in pistons and or a stroker crank then the piston to valve clearance will be less with big cams and compression ratio will be 1.2 points higher than the mfg states the pistons are.
So I tell most guys that if they go the ss route and then later on decide to go bigger on the motor then just sell the head and start over with another head. The SS head will still have good value and you wont be bound by its limits.
The best option is pistons with stock bores and a stage 2 head and cams with 47mm throttle bodies. but its more $$ than a ss head with 47mm tb's but it makes more power and leaves room for future builds.

Only thing is, ive never tore into a 14s motor. How difficult is it to tear down? I've built several quad motors, actually drag race quads as well. Have done several stroker motors so I do have knowledge as far as engine building is concerned but dropping the motor and tearing into it kinda makes me uneasy just to be honest. Kinda why I was trying to stick with just the headwork lol. So your opinion for what I'm trying to do would I be happy with a SS head and throttle bodies? Would that put me around a gen 2 pretty easily? Also what's the diff between stage 1&2 SS head? The porting?

y2kzx12r is THE man. He can answer all that. I believe the amount of porting, and the valve angles are the differences.
Yes, a s/s head with some porting and throttle bodies would get you around a gen 2 very easily. Rider weight being equal you wouldn't have any problems, a lighter rider you should still be able to beat.

The SS head and 47 mm TBs sound like a pretty good combo if you could really net a bit over 200 rwhp. Can someone tell me how much that would cost? Best place to buy?
