Gauge Color Mod...

Well i was finally able to find someone with enough experience to trust.
I ordered the LED kit to change the color of the gauges and the LCD screen on the 14.
Looks pretty sweet and it wasn't that difficult to do surprisingly. What do you think?

The pictures aren't that great due to my cell.. but I've seen worse..

there are 13 LED's to change when going with a different color.
I decided to leave the error light, oil light, high beam light and turn signals alone.
There are 4 LED's for tach, 4 for Speedo and 5 for the LCD.
All are surface mount and were pretty easy to solder in place once everything was taken apart.
If you don't have a steady hand i wouldn't recommend doing this though.

The kit came with 15 LED's just in case a bad one was in the batch. But all were good when i got them..

I am guessing that the wavelength of the green LEDs can't pass through the red filter of the 11, 12, 13 numbers. Notice that the "redline" doesn't light up either.
I hadn't thought about it before, but that would mean that if I did mine in red, all the numbers would show up the same, there would be no more "redline".

Thanks guys!

The 11, 12 & 13 don't show up at night due to the numbers being painted on the underside of the gauge face. The green light doesnt shine through the numbers how it does on the rest.

They all still show up in daylight, just dont show very much at night.

If i were to remove the red paint from the gauge face they would all show up the same. I just didnt feel like going that extra step.

If you were to go with all red LED's for the gauges it would look something like this...

I did not get my led's from that site but it just gives you an idea..

The red line shows up less with the Blue LED's as well..

and the white looks just fine

Yes you can replace just the screen if you want to.
I took the unit apart and just took him the mother board. The LCD screen comes off pretty easy once you have everything apart.

the LCD is held on by a few screws from the back side and 4 ribbon cables.

There was a video on youtube a while ago showing you how everything comes apart.
One thing to know and be careful of is the needles. Use something flat and sturdy to pry up on them. I used a tool that is made for pulling the plastic pins off of car doors. (the things that hold your door panel on). It worked pretty easy while trying not to scratch the gauge face at the same time.
The needle and the shaft it rotates on come out as one piece. the motor stays attached to the mother board. When you go tp put them back in it is best to mount the gauge faces on the board, barely push the needles in the motors, then go hook the board back up and turn on the key so the motor can find home. Then carefully pull the needles out and put them to zero. Push on them firmly and seat them all the way. Then turn the key off and back on, both needles should make a clean sweep and return to zero. If not remove and adjust again.

If i find the video ill post a link..

If you notice (i know its not the best pic) but in the 2nd pic i have posted of the mother board, The black receptacle is for the ribbon cable. the top bottom and right side in the pic slides upward. the left side stays stationary. If you look at it from the side it will make more sense. But you have to slide those up on each one to remove the ribbon. Once you do that and have the small black screws removed first its pretty easy. Just be careful not to pry too hard and to have your self grounded. With as small as some of the components are on the board I'm sure static electricity could fry it.

TH1RT3EN, Where did you get them? I used to see them on ebay, but can't find them now. Did you get them at bluegauges.com? or just get the pics there? I have been waiting to see if someone did this themselves before I risk my bike.

I am not sure what he charged you but it was worth it, I did mine a few years back and it was a pain. I found out that my hands are about as steady as crackhead's on a three day binge.
