Seeking Drag Strip Tips and/or More HP!

Hey guys,

So I'm trying to sort out how to go faster in the 1/4 - my '06 has a full Brock's Gen 3 exhaust, PCIII with Brock's map (I've tried both the Street and Track maps), using 87 octane pump gas (as instructed by Brock). The only other mods are fully lowered and stretched approx. 6" over, and using a Shinko Ultra Soft. I seem to manage consistent 9.50's and 60's, and have a best ever of 9.39. The bike never seems to mph over 145, and I weigh around 170 lbs in shorts. I "think" that I'm riding fairly well, but Brock seems to think I'm not getting the throttle open fast enough. Two nights ago, I let my friend, who is about 20lbs lighter than me, pilot the bike and he didn't go any faster than me or have better mph. And I've never let anyone alse take it down the track before that, but he is experienced, and rides a strip- only 'Busa that runs 8.0s. So I figured if I'm doing something really wrong, he'd be faster than me, which wasn't the case.
Based on my weight and mods on the bike, I'm thinking that I should have quicker e.t.s and be running at least 3 or 4 mph faster than currently. I've included a link to one of my passes from the other night so if anyone can see or hear something wrong, please feel free to give opinions. Other advice I've received include going down one on the front sprocket and removing the secondary flies. I've heard the flies removal make a big difference down low but not sure if that would really help on the strip. Also, I only hear good things about Brock's maps - but would a custom tune possibly yield considerably higher hp figures? I don't run MR12 or other race gas as I don't trailer the bike - and California has pretty strict penalties if a diligent officer picks up the sweet smell of MR12 on the highway. Thanks for any advice in advance...

Definitely will do - have to get to that after work. That particular pass was a 9.68 I think but again, will get that slip posted after work.

It's how the slip breaks down that is important. That will better show what you are doing with the clutch and throttle.

Yeah, that's another thing - most of the time grip is definitely an issue!

Let some air out of the tire and tight'en the rear rebound and compression for that track.

Sac track is a very fast track .. I raced there in the 70s .. Get ahold of Maddness , he races there for time to time and he may be able to help you .. There are a few guys here that have put down some really good numbers at Sac .. My money is Maddness will run a 8.80 first pass on your zx14 if there is not some kind of problem with your bike ..At 170 pounds you should be able to run 8.90s .. Maybe even faster come this fall at Sac .. The track is only 60 or so feet above sea level and in the fall the DA will be real low , maybe even below sea level ..
Post up your time tickets and we can tell more .. A video would also be a big help .. But my guess is your 60 and 330 times are way off .. Your MPH is way low so i'm betting your 660 MPH numbers are way to low also .. If you are not getting over 121 in the 660 you will never see 150s in the 1320 . Wheely and Tommy are both over 200 pounds and both have run in the 8s so it's doable at 170s if there is not a problem with your bike ..

Thanks Lee - and here is the link again to the video from my first post...

http://youtu.be/R0QRVLbWbfg

I'm wondering if something is wrong with the bike too. Then again, maybe I just need more practice. It doesn't look or sound like I'm messing up too bad in the video - aside from the traction issue, but that still doesn't account for the lacking mph. I'd love to let some light, semi-pro jockey take her down the strip just to see if it is me or the bike. There is a GrudgeFest event tomorrow evening, weather is supposed to be pretty good, so I may head back out...

Looking at the video you are on the clutch till the 330 mark !!! you need to be out of the clutch at the tree and throttle pinned !!! You will never run a good number on the clutch that long .. Didn't look like you were spinning , the front wheel was off the ground ..If it were spinning the tire would not have lifted .. I can also here the tire sticking .. You are bogging after the clutch is fully out ... You need some gear 16/41 at least , maybe 16/42 ... Pull them damn flys out right now !!!!! You are giving up to much ET in the 60 and 330 to go faster ..

It definitely spun as I recall the bike sliding to the right a bit and I think you can see it in the video. But I see what you mean about the clutch and getting off of it faster makes sense - but with the bike already bogging, I guess the only way to make that happen is to get the flys out and change the gearing. I don't know much about the sprockets - what is stock? is 16/41 down one in the front and up one on the back? 16/42 down one up front and up two in back?

16/41 is one down in the front ... Stock is 17/41 ...... 16/42 is one down in front and one up in the rear .. Trust me that will help .. Pulling the fly will help also .. Give it a shot and get back to use ..

And while you are at it .. Set both rear shock adjustors all the way in ( clock wise) and back them off ( or out ) a 1/4 of a turn .. That should help with any spinning ..

16/44, tight'en shock, flysout with brocks flysout track map. If you are airshifting, wait until 2nd gear to get your feet up so you don't upset the chasis.

16/44? Remember, I still want to drive this on highways once in a while as well. But maybe that isn't so extreme. . . not sure as I've only modded gears in cars. Oh, and I'm foot shifting - no air - at least yet.
Here's the time slip for the second video Lee posted for me - 9.600
