Sprockets

Hello all, I read this site often, but rarely post.

I am thinking about doing some sport touring. I am currently running an 07 ZX14 with a 43 tooth rear sprocket with 6 inch extensions. I'm not sure what the front sprocket is. I was thinking about taking the bike back to stock.

My reasoning being that with the extensions my chain is longer and I'd imagine more prone to break, not to mention more expensive to replace. Also I imagine I'd get better gas mileage with stock gearing. As she sits at 70mph I'm at about 4000rpm. What would I be at under stock gearing? I'm just trying to gauge if it's worth spending the money. I enjoy the whole getting shot out of a cannon feel of the current set up, but I suspect it wouldn't be ideal for sport touring.

Also if anybody has a set of stock links they would like to sell, I may be interested in buying them. Currently I have the roaring toyz 3 hole lowering links. I guess that without the extensions I may not need them. So I may be willing to trade.

Thanks for any info you guys can give me.

Rob

I tour alot and have the 43 rear and stock front (17) I could care less about mileage but get 33.4 average. gas mileage suffers when you choose a powerful race bike to tour with although you can pass 5 Harleys without downshifting... put your 3-hole link in the first hole and it should be stock height. no need to get the stock link. I personally wouldnt use (swingarm) extensions for touring.

I'm not super worried about gas mileage, but its something I'm considering. All of the mods to the bike were on it when I bought it. I got it for what I think was a steal of a price. $6700 for an 07 with 5400 miles in good condition. Every one else with one nearly as nice wanted $8k with twice the mileage. That might have more to do with the area I live in (Lancaster Pa). So far I've got 8050 on the clock in about 4 months and the bike handles surprisingly well with the extensions. I just have no idea what it handles (and for that matter wheelies) like without them. I gather I'd have to learn to ride the bike aggressively all over again. Thanks for the info!

Don't worry about the chain breaking, just because it's longer. Too many big hp bikes that don't break chains.
I would leave it like it is, but that's just my $.02

I just took mine from North Carolina to Missouri in a weekend. I did go back to stock gearing for the trip. I left it extended though. I also left my lowering links in the middle hole just like I have on a daily basis. Pretty much averaged 80 MPH and with the speedo matching the GPS. I averaged 39.7 MPG for the trip. Once I got there and rode around town a lot for two weeks it went back down to around 36 or so.

Day to day driving I'm only getting about 29mpg, of course I'm a bit throttle happy. On the instant readout at 70 or so it says I'm getting 43mpg. Of course I'm a big guy so weight is definitely a factor.

Day to day with 16 x 41 on it, I got about 29 - 30 mpg. Just cruising on the trip with stock gearing the mpg really came up.
