Mike & Feeler for valve adjustment

Can anyone recommend a specific feeler gauge that will work well to check valve clearance? All i know about them is that they come in various quantity of blades.

I was planning on getting a micrometer also. I can get a Starrett for ~$100 but i hear a $20 Harbor Freight will work as good foe occasional use.

^^the 32 blade? Does that look like what I need or should I look for something with more blades or longer blades?

open to suggestions on micrometer too.

Get a set from the auto parts store with the 45 bend on the end. A cheap feeler gauge will work. No more than you plan to use it. you can even get some digital calipers if you want.

Thanks, Big. Looks like there is a feeler like you describe in the link on my last post. It seems more like a 30 degree bend which looks like it would be easier to reach under a cam. The straight blades, you would have to bend to go under the cam.

I'm staying away from digital for a distance measuring device. Read where someone claimed they can be way off in a certain range of the measurement. --However, if I am willing to consider a HF analogue mike, I should not turn my nose up at a high quality one just because it is digital.

I guess it would make sense to try to get a set of blades that will include the entire range of thickness that the shims come in. What range of measurement should I look for? I know that I might need to go back and buy a second feeler gauge But I would feel better knowing what is a good tool to start with. ---so I don't buy a 36 blade gauge only to find that 34 of the blades are far bigger than anyone would ever need.
