Friends dyno nightmare

So a friend had his 05 r1 dyno tuned, he left the shop and got 2 miles down the road and his motor threw a rod bearing! Could the dyno guy have caused this?

unless he didnt something totally retarded or it had horrible detonation. I'd blame the oil level first.

Well that just sucks, hope he can figure out why. But I'm with Compton on low oil or sludged oil passage - if it was detonation or burnt piston, thats a no-brainer dyno dickhead do-over - good luck to your buddy, he has my condolences

The dyno shop said they are not responsible.
The bike ran fine and was not abused, regular oil changes (Lucas). Had under 10k on motor. The dyno guy had big troubles with it being to lean and to rich during the session.

Too rich wouldnt hurt the bike nearly like too lean would, but thats the answer I figured from the dyno tech.
Damn, sometimes ya never know but definitely doesnt sound right since it was well cared for - might have just been one of those freak things that can happen - wont be a quick and easy repair, but might not cost a bunch if you guys can do the work and the cranks ok - once its apart, you'll know

The difference between detonation induced bearing damage and oil supply issues should be visible on the bearing, esp those only showing early sign or partial damage,
Clevite has a good series of pics of bearing damage analysis , our bike bearings show as slightly different to read but enough of the differences show through
eg smeared bearing is definitely oil supply

Should have been knocking before he left.
No way a tune throws a rod in two miles, unless its super lean and your friend help it WFO the entire time.

I say low oil also.

Every dyno I've had my bike on I had to sign a waver first. Dyno's are very hard on motors.

They should not be any more hard on motors than in use on the road .
however if the dyno was the first stop after mods then any problem with assembly will become very obvious quickly...

Yes, but not a full service shop, I'm not a experienced engine builder. So far I have not had to turn away one customer. Mostly maintenance work like tires, oil changes, carb work, chains and sprockets ect, some electrical troubleshooting, fork work, some big bore and top end mods and repair, wheel bearings, most everything but splitting the cases. In time I'm sure I'll get there, but around here I'm seeing no demand for those repairs( with this one exception.) All of my customers have been exreamly satisfied with me and my shop, you would be surprised how far you can get with a fair hourly rate and honest work ethics, I've got a shop full of atv's dirtbikes, sportbikes and the occasional Harley or goldwing any day of the week.

My guess was detionation had led to the bearing failure, but like I said I'm not an experienced engine builder and that's why I asked everyone's opinion here.

Oil was at the correct level.
But your right I just map quested it, it didnt throw a rod in two miles, it was 2.4 miles till it let loose. On a more serious note he was giving it hell trying out the new tune.

Hey my first Yamaha was bad ass, a Tri Zinger!! (small 3 wheeler) I had more fun on that thing than any other motorcycle, atv or sportbike since. Rode that thing every day after school till bed time, and I dont remember ever shutting it off at all during summer break!

My first and only Yamaha is still going strong after 20 plus years and 61,000 miles. 1986 FJ1200. The legend car guys really liked this engine back then. We bracket raced it and rode it out of state on long trips for years.

This is a one in a thousand incident. I recommend you find a good dyno tuner and get a custom tune done.

Dyno guy got it too lean and hurt it end of story. Rider finished it off. These bikes in proper tune are unbreakable under most conditions. Wackos at bike night take them to the rev limiter in neutral coming and going everywhere and they are back every week. And don't forget the burnouts leaving....

How lean is to lean I've ran my motor bike crazy lean and it never broke a ROD I can see maybe hurting a piston but not a rod through the block...
