What's with your MPH?
I was at the track last weekend. Let's just say the weather and track conditions were less than stellar. There were three ZX-14's with all the bolt-on mods...Three riders weighing 160lbs, 215 lbs and 235 lbs. Some Muzzy, some Brock etc.
All of our MPH was about the same ranging from 137-140 MPH.
The best MPH I have ever had was 144 MPH in perfect conditions (NOT last weekend). Now to my question....
How are all you guys running 150 MPH plus on stock motor? There was a thread the other day with a stock motor busa, 01smokes, he weighs 205 lbs and he was trapping 150 mph.
What are we doing wrong?

look at the 1/8 mph .... you can only pick up so much on the back half.

What is your track elevation? In fact, which track??
Muncie, for example, is at 935 feet. On a hot summer day you are probably over 3k feet of density altitude, which will rob power. Out here on the east coast we are all fairly close to sea level.
Here is a density altitude calculator that will look up the conditions on various tracks; you specify the date:
http://www.dragtimes.com/da-density-altitude-calculator.php
The 1/8th can tell you something, but a lazy throttle hand can skew those back half comparisons. You may also have stingy clocks at your track...hard to say. When I first started running my 14 I was only running 142-144 mph footshifting. But after losing weight from the bike, a lot of setup trial and error, and running MR9, I was able to run 152 mph at about 220 lbs suited.

My track in Iowa is also 900 ft and there's summer days where the air is 3000 plus feet and I still run 148 to 149 on a full weight 14 and in good air have been 152 on a full weight 14 and I was 216 lbs unsuited. gen 2 busa's mph exactly the same plus or minus just a hair.

That must be a pretty fast track if you are running 149 mph in 3000' of air at 240 lbs suited. That's at least 750 lbs of bike/rider to move!
Do any of you guys have a GPS on your bikes? I think there is a difference between "the best" you have ran, and an average. I see plenty of 14's run under 150 mph at MIR, and it is near sea level. There are plenty of "mph" dispute threads on this board. All timers are not created equally, as we have seen.

I know I go 145 Like clock work in abq And I was stamping out 150s every pass down in Houston when I would ride 4th gear out shifting to 5th would take me to 147-148.

Nope not fast at all, I'm down on mph compared to what alot of guys post on this and psychobike for mph. worst conditions that bike fell to high 147 and yes track is right on to gps! my busa at swb ran 148 to 150 last yr at 3 different tracks and air was as bad as 3800 ft that I know of. I really think my new one will run 155 or better on motor on pump gas.

Like everyone else, we need more information. Are you swb, extended, other mods? What are your 60', 330', 1/8 and 1/4 et's? 1/8 mph? Post up a time slip or at least a breakdown and we would be able to shed a little more light on the subject.

Yes Shane-Muncie
Let me preface by saying ambient temp was about 46* and I think the ground was still frozen underneath. We were sliding all over the place. We probably shouldn't have even ran, but since we were there.....
Ok, Patrick and I running against each other...the same timeslip:
'06 ZX14
Over 1/2 tank of gas (I know)
Lowered, Dragstrap
66"
17/46
Flies Out
PC3
Muzzy Full Exhaust
CL Lock-Up Clutch
Brocks Spacers on factory springs
Foot Shifting
I weigh 215 lbs
60' 1.975
330 4.697
1/8 6.891
MPH 111.55
1000 8.796
1/4 10.42
MPH 138.71
I know this is really bad, but I was spinning trying to launch @ 3000 rpm. There was absolutely no heat in the track.

Lowered, dragstrap
64"
16/46
Flies Out
Brock's Alienhead
PCV
Air shifter
That's all that I can remember he has.
Rider weight 235 lbs
60' 1.891
330 4.738
1/8 6.929
MPH 112.28
1000 8.821

From what I have seen, the Busa's mph better than the 14 under similar conditions...
I have also found that the 14 seems to be fairly sensitive to shift points as far as mph goes....at least mine was.
You are way down on weight this year, as is the bike, right? I am going to take a good GPS to my local track next time I go.

Looking at the numbers, I would say that maybe you guys were being real easy with the throttle due to traction issues? That seems like what you were saying...and that is going to lead to low mph, for sure.
I would wait until you have a good day, with good traction, and then see what that brings.

No question, it was rough and that was the first time I have been out on anything that has been stretched. I have always ran SWB up to this point.
Yeah, I can't wait for the track to hook. There is a point in 1st gear on SWB that I know the bike is going to start climbing towards the sky, now being 66", it is really weird when it didn't climb!!! I am going to have to get used to that.

That's it, seat time, when you start hooking, you will get to full throttle sooner, and the mph will climb.

Ya you can't want high mph with passes like that, you need traction and then start opening the gas sooner. indy at your weight and mods your a full second or more off in the 1/8th.

Somehow I pulled 151.5 on my swb once. 150 a few more times.
And I weigh in at about 225 in leathers in gear. I'm also at sea level and the track had traction compound all the way out to the 1/8 mile that day.

i was being very easy on the launch that day, i was not hitting WOT until about 200 feet out or so, sometimes not until later than that. The track sucked ass that day and i was not comfortable at all with it.
Plus with a 10 foot wide strip of grass between the lanes from 1/8th mile on kinda freaks me out. ill stick to a track that is all concrete or blacktop. In the "Oh Shit" instance you have a better chance of staying rubber side down with out grass in the picture.

What seems to be a normal backhalf gain with a stock motor is 26-28mph (at least mine anyway). Have seen a few 152mph passes a couple yrs ago but not over 150 since.

Ok, so its definitely a front half of the track issue. We shall see how it does when we get better track conditions. Thanks for all the input.
I really need to get WOT fast when the track permits....that's gonna be the difference.
