Removing Cams
19K miles and checking valve clearance. 8 are tight . What is the best way to remove the cams?

Set the engine to TDC .. Remove the cam chain Adjustor ..Unbolt the cam caps ...Remover the Cam chain from one cam at a time ...Remove cams ... Don't drop the chain down the hole , use a wire tie or something to keep it from falling ...Don't rotate the engine while it is apart ..

That's what I did. The fun part is putting it back together and hoping it starts. Im in the hoping stage right now!

Would they be any advantages of using adjustable cam spockets on a stock motor advancing it a bit?

When you have it reassembled, rotate the engine BY HAND 720 degrees at least a couple of times to make sure nothing goes bump in the dark. Recheck the marks. If you have it wrong the starter motor will bend stuff in a heart beat.

put #1 & 4 at TDC with #4 cam lobes at about 10 & 2 o'clock (int & exh)
mark the chain and the corresponding tooth on the cam spkt or better zip tie the chain onto the cams spkts.
I dunno about the 14, but on the 12 you can swing the cams out of the way to pull the buckets.
do not rotate the motor when cams off as smokin' said.
after reassembly carefully rotate the motor as ozonekiller says.
be sure to only rotate in the direction of operation (clockwise looking from the right side)
no matter how careful i am, i ALWAYS put a degree wheel on it after reassembly and check cam CL's.

Will the chain fall off the crank sprocket when the cct is removed? How is cct reset? Zip ties is a great idea. Why do I need to find TDC?

the chain will not fall off until you remove the cams. If it does fall off I'd just use a magnet to pick it back up with, your real problem is reinstalling the cams everything has to be time to the right spot you really need a manual.

Back when I had a shop, I sold a guy a top end job, TWICE, cause he insisted that he didn't need no stinkin' manual.
If in doubt, I'm sure that there is someone in the St Louis area who will look over your shoulder and assist. That's part of motorcycling is the social aspect of hanging out in the garage. At least it is in my garage.
You must find TDC (1-4 mark lined up with the case mating line at the 9 o'clock position) as that is the starting point to timing the cams.
If you just yank stuff apart willy nilly it's just too easy to lose track of where the hell you are.
