VFR will not rev above 5500 rpm

Hi All,

I know it has been a while since I've written but I'm having a problem with the VFR that someone might be able to assist me with.

OK first a brief story of how I got here. About 1.5 years ago my VFR was leaking oil and the spark plug exploded. The Plug exploded because it was not tightened to spec (my fault). One of the Master Techs offered to fix the plug and tune the engine up.

He did however when everything was put together the motor would not rev above 5500 and was a bitch to warm up (No issue idling). So the Tech checked the fuel Pump, Compression, fuel lines air filter, fuel filter and pretty much everything from a motor point of view has been checked. This leaves me with the CPU/electrical problem. I know it is rear that the CPU fails but the bike does have over 121,000 miles on it and the crash I had in 2004 was on the side that the CPU sits on.

Why do we suspect the CPU? Well the automatic en-richer does not work. When I fired her up while cold she will idle at 1200 rpm where the 2009 VFR bumps up to about 2500 rpm until warm. The tech says that there might be a error code that is in a safety mode and thus will not let the engine (once warm) rev above 5500 rpm.

Now I can buy a used CPU from ebay but I have a Canadian VFR and the CPU on ebay is US. Different codes but I think it should be OK.

Hey all I know we are talking VFR and not ZX-14, but I have faith that someone on the website may have seen an issue like this before and any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks
Rob

Doesn't the cts or temp sensor / harness run along wright there close to where the CPU sits on that VFR? I am pretty sure that harness pigtails along with the TOS wiring' and all comes together wright close to the CPU.
Have you replaced the temp sensor and or traced out that bundle of wiring in that entire circuit ?
The VFR' is very sensitive to coolant control low speed a/f and run like crap if its anything even remotely upsetting that circuit, the least little corrosion or frayed wire sit them into fits, the TPS .
has been checked i m guessing'' as this will definitely run a slh code on that honda...

Yes your correct they do run along the frame and pig tail. Both front and main harnesses (is that a word?) have been replaced, and the tech replaced both the thermostat and fan sensor. I pulled the fairing and moved every wire mentioned on both sides and even around the stay. I pulled every fuse just to insure that contact is good. Honda uses what they call a Bank Angle Sensor and I pulled that fuse and it did kill the engine. I opened the fuel tank to confirm the FI was getting plenty of air. I'm down to a couple items but the CPU makes the most sense, 5500 rpm is too consistent for just about anything else to make sense. Ground was the next item but I don't see why this would be an issue, but I've not checked anything is the rear except the fuses.

I tell ya at this point you have damn near eliminated everything but the CPU. Your wright to not jump to the brain first thing ( which you obviously didn't) as its almost always blamed but never the cause! but in this case it seems to be the most likely culprit. ...........

Bill,

Thanks I'm hoping this is one of those problems that sometime in the middle of the day you think of something I have not thought of, if so please send me a heads up.

One question I'd like to answer, before I buy a US CPU would anyone know if it will work in the Canadian model??

The mfg number differences were I think us model carried a M and Canadian was B. Most of the the other numbers were the same. Forgive me if this link does not work, been a while since I've done this.

Well a quick update,
I bought a new CPU off ebay put her in the bike and I still have the same issue. I put the first cpu back in and it did seem to be a little better but still 5500 rpm is all she can muster. Any suggestions??? The wife says find out what's wrong with it or it's gone. Love that old bike, when she is not acting funky she really is a nice riding motorcycle.

Well the automatic enrichener if not working properly will cause the problem you are having. On a 03 R6 it has a little solenoid that actuates the enrichener on all 4 throttle bodies, with an adjustment screw. Somehow this particular bike the adjustment screw mount got bent and let the bike stay pretty much fully enriched all the time. Bent it back and adjusted the screw to the max position cause the solenoid is a little on the weak side and the client doesn't have the $$$ for a new one. Now she runs perfect. Just don't know how she runs in the cold weather
