Chain going bad .. I think. Need some advice.

I was lubing the chain like I always do every 300-400mi and I noticed that a piece of rubber was sticking from one of the links. It was thin and seemed like it was a part of a circle so I assume it is a rubber seal. I am not sure if I can get it fixed if I get a replacement link or do I have to get a new chain???

If I got to get a new chain can anyone recommend a brand which is strong and durable? I normally don't cheap out for parts and I'd prefer to spend the extra $ if it = strength, durability and reliability.

That's your o rings coming Out of the chain. Ek zzz are a one of the best o ring chains out there.

Thanks eclipse!

I am assuming I will need to get 120 links and maybe remove a couple since my sprockets are as stock as they get? (EK530ZZZ-120)

Do I really have to remove all this junk as the manual suggests? The swing arm? ... really?

Remove:
- Rear Wheel
- Engine Sprocket
- Swingarm

Cut/break the old chain. Attach the new one to it with a zip tie or similar, and pull it through.

I believe the factory chain is 116 links?? You will need to remove a few links to size it properly

Rivet the new one, adjust tension. You are done..

Just make sure you know exactly how many links you need before you remove any from the new chain. Also take into account any gearing change you might make; that can affect chain length requirements.

You need to replace sprockets with the chain as well.

Yes you're right the stock is 116 links and I am planning to stay stock on the sprockets so I'll prolly have a few leftover after it's all done.

My D.I.D chain lasted longer than the EK . I am trying a Jap made American Standard right now was less and heard they are as good as the D.I.D so far so good at 7K 3rd chain . 59K on my 06 and still running strong at 175 + Dyno HP and it wasnt set on happy mode.

Unless you fried your chain pre mature . Your spockets should be chainged so the new chain will last and wear even with un worn sproket teath. How many miles on your bike.

Yep. Front and rear.
Your going to have fun changing the front sprocket. They are usually on there pretty good. I believe it's a 27mm socket. I know if you have a orilleys auto parts store they carry the socket.

9k is not that much you might be able to go cheap for now and just put on a chain if the teeth look good . The chain may wear out sooner . Next time you should replace all three for sure.

Famin> Yea I'll have to take a look and see what the teeth look like and maybe I won't have to spend a day in the friggin garage instead of heading up to the twisties next weekend.

Eh in this case what brand/model do you guys recommend for sprockets?

I like the stock setup so I am not really looking to change the gearing.. though i have not really experienced different setups either...

A under 9k miles, if properly lubed and adjusted through it's history, I would go ahead and re-use the sprockets. They are steel, and pretty tough.

A 16t front sprocket would make it a lot of fun to ride on the street,
I like vortex sprockets. I have had great luck with them. As far as miledge, I don't know if it's what your looking for.

Yea Mileage is what I need. I don't really drag race. I just have fun with it up in the North GA mountains and I am planning on some track days next month since I had the notorious valve cover leak too this month :-( ..

Yes like Shane most likley at that milege they most likley will look good if your not drag racing . If you do get new spockets make sure the teeth are steel . Full Aluminum rear sproket teeth is a waste of money.

I changed my first chain & spckets after 30K . You should be fine but you need to research and be the final judge of your bike & saftey. I have seen rear sprocket teeth thin and starting to bend on smaller bikes from neglect.

I was freaked when i saw thin pieces of o-ring sticking out of the chain and stuck to the wheel. They were all like short bristles. an o-ring is under 1/16" but prolly more than 1/32" . If what you see is a lot thinner than that, it is probably just you looking real hard at your chain and getting worried for no reason. A busted o-ring would be a pretty large piece.

I ran my chain for 25,500. I lubed it real often because I thought it had broken o-rings. Just changed to an EK ZZZ an looking at the stock chain up close and off the bike, not a single broken o-ring. The little flat pieces of black rubber were just edges that cracked off. I don't know if there is any correlation but it happened after cleaning the chain with WD-40. Don't know if it was the WD or just the intense scrubbing on the chain. Maybe both.

what happened with the Tsubaki Chains, you do not get them in the states?
this is IMO the best brand chain
in Europe they cost USD1,35 (euro 1) per link but the chain is sure worth it,

we do not mess with D.I.D. and such sorts of brands, these are by far not as good as Tsubaki.
