I was just about to start a thread about the same thing. I have a film all over the front of the motor. Nothing on the sides. I think I know what it is. Three years of a small oil consumption and now I think I know what it is.

Well, I don't want to jack your thread, johnson. I have pics but lets get you squared away first.

Oil on CCT? Maybe it's not tight. I'd try the screws and if they don't tighten, wipe it off and keep an eye on it.

I had oil on the outside of the black plastic part that connects to T bodies. This after only 8-9 months old. I was told it may be some kind of lube used to slide the plastic on there. I wiped it up and never saw it come back. ---I did notice oil on my flies when I pulled them at about the same time. Thought that might have been related. Perhaps I over serviced.

Don't worry, johnson. I have heard of so many of these bikes leaking from valve covers and it is not a serious problem. If the motor isn't cracked, you'll be fine. I'm not worried about my baby. Just want to stop the leak to keep her clean.

The residue on the outside of the T-bodies on my bike seemed like it may have been sticky, sorta. Perhaps not engine oil but some kind of lube to fit parts as mentioned in my post above.

^^Milky oil sight glass in cool weather--- normal. Has happened to me several times. All 3 bikes I have owned did that. Its just a light fog of condensation that will evap away in time. The only thing you can do is avoid short trips and of course, warm the bike up well before taking off.

This is why I am adamant about not starting the bike in the winter. The condensation forms and sits there in the motor all winter. If you are riding every day now, I wouldn't bother over it. If you change your oil in this cold damp weather, that willprobably cause more condensation than you have now. Not the end of the world---just something I try to avoid.

Well, I promised to show pics. Here we are.
From the top.....

all the way to the bottom. Just the front--nothing to speak of on the sides.

Is this the infamous valve cover leak?

Looks like a lot of us are concerned about this at this time of year. http://www.bikeland.org/board/viewthread.php?FID=27&TID=60621&set_time=

There must be an awful lot of threads like this. Good luck Johnson. I'll be tackling mine after a little early Spring riding. Maybe I'll post more here when the time comes.

I had this happen to me this spring also. The mech @ the dealer said he was able to see little bubbles coming out from the valve cover gasket in one place as the motor was running. I even had to add some more oil cuz it leaked out pretty good. He said that the replacement gasket was slightly thicker. I have an '09 8800mi. It was still under warranty so i got lucky about this one. I have a feeling this won't be the last time this happens :-)

Oh well, you or a mech will have to check valve clearance at some point (check manual for scheduled maintenance- think it may be 14,000 miles) . I'm at 25.5K and still have not checked valves but no reason to not do so now.

I even had to add some more oil cuz it leaked out pretty good.

Me too. ~ 2/3 quart / 2500 miles. Between oil changes, I used up about all of that 5th quart of oil we have to buy to get the last few ounces for correct level. That was since new. Second oil change, I am sure I started noticing consumption. Never saw any blue smoke, the oil just disappeared. This was it. Not so bad when you think of other reasons an engine might eat oil.

Just did the washers yesterday. Did only the left side. I ran out of knuckles. I`ll post later if it works. 2008 Sapphire

I would be willing to bet valve cover gasket. A new gasket will only fix it temporarily. You need to add washers under the head of the bolts, or machine down the shoulder on the bolt if you have available equipment

Would you do the washer trick along with the new gasket install or would you wait until it leaks or starts using oil before placing washer under each bolt head?

I had to clean the left throttle body up from a light sticky residue this weekend. It may be some sort of assembly lube because its texture is not like engine oil residue.
