08 SE color
I would like to paint my 07 SE the same color as the black on the 08 SE. Does anyone know where I could get the paint for the cheapest and what color it actually is?

I would go to an automotive paint seller and see what they could come up with for you since you are not needing to match colors as would be the case with touch up work.
Are you doing the painting yourself? I would like to paint my wheels and could use some direction....if you don't mind me jacking your thread a little bit..

funny thing about that, i don't know squat about painting really. I am an Airframer in the Navy and i paint planes, but it doesnt really matter how they turn out, as long as they are painted the correct color. i was hoping to just trial and error everything. i think i've got the basics down.

I've heard painting plastics ( especially gloss black ) is tricky to get just right........but cant elaborate personally, just what I've heard from guys that have tried it.
But, I have done wheels before - ironically enough zx6reaker, I used "aircraft stripper" to pull all the factory paint from the wheel before cleaning and repainting........worx great, just paintbrush it on and 30 minutes later hose it all off - may need a little fine steel wool for extra stubborn paint.
I usually polished the rim and taped it up before painting the mag/hub portion of the wheels - a popular look for cheap.
Most wheels got 4 to 5 coats of color and then 3 coats of clear, always fog it on evenly and heat dry between coats to help keep chipping down - it's still not as stone and debris defiant as powdercoating, so yearly touchup was typically neccessary. Honestly, if you're gonna spend the money for good paint, definitely read up on the technique
Be sure to post pics up when you're done!!!

For what it would cost to repaint a factory color, why not try and pick up a set of plastics? Would be close to the same price as painting it and you would have a complete set of fairings.

^^^Only one prob......you still would have a white tank. I don't know if a small quantity like 1/2 quart would be enough to give the tank a good coat. You would want to have a good thick coat on the tank. As I understand it, the 08 SE has no clearcoat on the black parts.
Another prob.....you are not going to find a whole set of satin black fairings. The tails and lowers are red on the 08 SE. You will be painting no matter what. You are already doing it all day and you have the facilities and equipment at your disposal. I'd just bring in a sample of 08 SE paint to an automotive paint supplier that is equipped to do color analysis. They will be able to mix something up for you that no one will ever know is not OEM paint and it will be a lot cheaper. 08 SE black is not one of Kawi's multi layer effect colors so if you buy a touch up pen from Color Right for ~$20, that will give you a perfect sample.
Imperfections in a black paint job are going to be obvious unless it is a dead matt surface. I've seen crappy DIY paint jobs on black cars. It is atrocious. Like looking at a funny mirror at the fair. I'd give it a shot on a plane first. why not, you can always paint back over that.
One last thought. If you are satisfied with a color mixed by a local paint supplier, you could prob find a pro who would do a good job applying the paint for $300 and you would still be spending about the same as if you did your own with color right paint. The dark color is going to make this simple paint job a bit of a challenge if you are a perfectionist (which is better than being a half-assist).
I have amillion questions about wheels but I'll just wait 'til this convo dies down so it does not get confusing.

Just saw this thread got bumped up. HAve a look. Might change your mind a little. I like both coated and uncoated but must say, an uncoated color sounds like it is going to be a lot more fragile than a clearcoted.

With half a gallon of paint, I painted my '81 RX-7 with the help of a neighbor who worked in a body shop for 20 years. With what was left over after 3 coats, I put 5 coats on my 99 CBR900. I have never done paint before and it turned out great. The only mistake I made was that I used a single stage acrylic instead of a clear coat. Well, I also ruined a helmet trying to paint it to match, but that was because I didnt use enough hardener. Glad I did that on the helmet, not the bike.
Don't go cheap on the paint. After about 4 years, it didn't look so good anymore. If I would have used the two stage, it would have still been good. You can put a clear coat on if you want high gloss or even a flat finish.
You are looking at about 250-350 worth of materials plus the equipment to do it yourself.
The custom plastics range from 650 and up. I have even seen one or two that include the tank (those are around 1000, if I remember correctly). But I have heard that the fitment isn't always good. And, are you getting fiberglass or ABS?
For my money, I would prob go with what Rook said...get it mixed and have a pro shoot it for you.

Hello ZX6breaker-- where do you live? If you are close to the Dallas/Ft.Worth area, I can help you paint the parts.

If you need a seat cover in the se 08 I've got one I would let go for cheap. It is mint and never been on a bike, came with my bike because for some reason my cowl was missing.

I'm not trying to recreate an 08 SE, just going with a similar color. I really like the way the black is on the 08. I just don't like the flames and the red. I wont be doing my wheels at all. leaving them red and I want to do the goerge formans like the 08. If i do anything else with it, it would be some stickers. I am also going to drop and lower it a bit.

I would just start with a black base coat, add some small rainbow metal flake to some clear with a flattening agent if you want flat, then cover that with a few coats of flattened clear. Just be careful spraying the flake- if it's too wet and pools up anywhere it will unbalance the amount of flake in that area.

Just keep in mind the flat paint is more vulnerable to scratches and wear marks. Especially on sharp edges. My mirrors look like hell! I will be painting mine when I get some money and time and I plan on staying with the color combo (especially with the red frame, dang it) but doing some custom skull work, cemetery theme and a naked lady somewhere with a devil tail and fangs or something to that effect. lol and gloss cleared too
