No more cam chain noise

I have not heard my cam chain at start up for some time now. I use to hear it all the time at start up for about a half minute then it would go away. I think the Shell rotela T6 oil I have switch to must of have silenced it. And I spead shift all the time daily riding very smooth. I was a little concernd about the cheaper oil but has done well in my 14 with 57K.

The oil has nothing to do with that noise. Its the oil pressure that stops the noise not the oil.

Maybe the tensioner clicked out to the next notch. It is spring loaded to some degree and auto adjusts as your cam chain stretches. It is basically on a ratcheting mechanism that doesn't allow the tensioner to be any looser than the maximum stretch just before the next step on the ratchet. Therefore your chain can only ever be that lose. Once it clicks out to next step the chain will be tighter again until it stretches a bit. When the gap is smaller oil may not run out due to surface tension or the oil pressure takes up the slack faster when its close and there is much less noise. Either way, it is only temporary. Trust me, your cam chain noise is coming back. It

Just a thought--I'm not a synthetic user. Tried Repsol 4-T Race once. No CCT noise for a couple hundred miles. By 500, it was like normal oil. Might try a dif brand some day but the Repsol wasn't worth it AFAIC.

I've used rotella, amsoil, maxium, and I still get the rattle. I think it's a coincidence.
Rook, not to start another oil thread, but it's been proven over that synthetic is the way to go.

Oh--why not- this is an oil thread already.

Yeah--I'll try it again. A different brand of synthetic, definitely. I'm putting an APE CCT on there soon so I believe that noise will be silenced forever. It's not even that bad but for $50, seems kind of fun.

I will say, the shifting was extremely slick with the Repsol I used 2 years ago but it lasted very briefly and then all was normal.. I don't want to pay $70 for normal. Yeah, Rotela can be purchased at Walmart for cheap, I know. I'm just apprehensive about using an oil that is not motorcyce specific. I know---everybody uses Rotela and there are no problems.

My fix was just plugging my ears at startup....

Has there ever been a cct failure or is it just a an OCD issue?

Damn. It's not just hd truck oil anymore.
A lot of guys here use mobil1 as well. No problems.

Togive you a good example, my bike has mostly has rotella. I changed the clutch in November, thinking after 1 1/2 years and approx 400 dragstrip passes it's got to be close to being gone. Nope. Clutch still looks good.

Not sure if the install is as easy as the APE, but it cost almost three times as much because the factory zx12r tensioner is like $100. Then, you have to get it modified.

The automatic adjusters (like the zx12r's) can back out at high rpm when you let off the gas which could lead to top end damage.

What I like about the APE is that it is easy to install and set. It is SO easy to adjust and does not need adjusting very often at all. (Not even every oil change for me) Also, it maintains constant pressure on the cam chain no matter what the rpm or throttle position.

I think you would be good to go either way APE or modded zx12r CCT, but I would say get rid of that stock CCT, it gets embarrassing everytime you start your bike. People look at you like "what the f**k's wrong with your bike?"

Sounds like there are some variables there.....Was your cam chain already worn out? How tight were you setting the manual CCT.

Read quite a number of posts in the past few weeks and this is the first owner I have heard that reported a problem with the APE CCT. Haven't heard anyone complain about a modded ZX-12 CCT.

Yeah, like I said, APE Manual or zx12r CCT, I think either way you'd be alright.

I can't tell you how many burnt up cam chain guides I have repaired in the past from a manual tensioner improperly tightened. Other than that you can't beat it. I would use the 12R modded one on mine but the turbo 14 had a APE manual.

Jim at Comp CNC did the machine work on my ZX-12 CCT. If you do not have the "Touch" a manual CCT will cause you problems in the long run. I have tried several different brands of oil with no help on cold start CCT tick. Modded ZX-12 is my pick.
