Superbikes the last frontier

For some of the young guys here that were not around during the muscle car era it was a great time starting in the 60s and topping out in 72 with the oil embargo. Every year it was something new Ford, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Chrysler, even Studebaker got in the race. I could hardly wait for the next year to see who was going to be the bad guy on the block! Then came along government bureaucracy high oil prices gas went from $.20 a gallon to $.50 a gallon outrageous! LOL. I had a 71 Mustang 429 ram air I had to beg somebody to buy it for $1600. Well you can still go out and buy a new supercar if you have between 80,000 and $1 million to pay for a new toy?

And then along comes superbike factory muscle at a reasonable price. And the race has never been better. Each manufacture trying to outdo the other power to weight ratios crazy fast. Some as good as 1 hp for ever 2.6 pounds power to weight. to give you some idea what that means a 3,200 pound car making 1200 hp will give you a power to weight ratio of 2.6. And you can stop and fill your bike up at the local gas station! Well I'm sure there's somebody out there waiting to put a stop to all this? were having way too much fun.

Ken, a lot of the guys here are too young to even remember the two stroke terrors that dominated the streets back then like the Kaw 750 triple. Hell, the only new two stroke made when I was old enough to have one was the Yam RZ350..

Yes I had a 750 Honda that I made into a 900 I thought it was pretty quick for the time and a friend of mine, with a Kawi 750 triple two-stroke that he had made into 850 and he put a serious weapon on me. But it would rattle your teeth out at 8000 LOL

Hey Ken. I had a 750 S.O.H.C. Honda back in the day with 811 kit. Russ Collins header etc..wow where has time gone. Most 3 cylinder 2smokers would not last long on the street in the Hot Texas summers. Center cylinder would fry the rings if you did not mix the bean oil just right :-) It was good meeting you and your son last month. Happy New Year.

Ken,
I remember when gas went from .35 to .50 cents, then to .75, I was pissed!...Back in the day.......My first 5 cars were, '69 GTO, '69 SS Nova, '70 Duster, '72 RoadRunner, '72 Torino, etc, to name a few. They were a blast..... In regards to Superbikes, I agree with you. I think we are at the same point, although I think with concessions like the 186/7 mph. top speed limiter, we may be close to big brother curtailing our fun. Let's hope not.......
