What event drew you to sportbikes??

As a young kid I grew up in Alabama, My parents got me a CAT minibike from Sears when I was 4.5 yrs. old. It was one of those 3.5 Briggs&Stratton powered hardtail framed minibikes that had a steel plate the pushed up against the rear tire for a brake. I could not even crank it. I remember rounding the side of the house and sliding it around in the oak leaves that were on the ground. I would ride it until it ran out of gas. My Dad was a motorcycle rider and a Hot Rod car kind of guy. As early as I can remember he had some Harleys and a couple of BSA bikes. He and some of his buddies were always fooling around with them and would run each other all the time for fun. I moved on to a Minitrail 50, 70 and then got my first Honda XR75, Which is when I started racing dirtbikes. Man those were some fun days back then. But the event that made me want a streetbike was in 1970. My Dad bought a used 1969 Honda 750 four. It was the first inline four motorcycle I had ever seen. It was used and someone had put some dual pipes on it and it was loud. Some of his friends came over to our house and I will never forget what he did. He fired it up for them, pulled it out on our driveway and held the front brake and did a long smoking burnout. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen. That was the moment I was hooked. I told him I had to have a streetbike. It's been a few years since he's passed on now but I will never forget me and him riding that Honda 750. As a young kid on back of the bike with your Dad gassing it and going through curves and winding it out on straitaways, It was thrilling and it was the time of my life. My Mom would have killed him and it might not be politically correct these days but I will never forget it and was what influnced me to ride sportbikes. Sorry for the long post, maybe it's the Holidays. Merry Christmas!

i fell in love with sportbikes in the late 80s when i seen my first.. (yes im a 80s baby) an early ZXR750 it was white blue & lime green and it had that florescent lime green wind shield it looked so cool it had the intake tubes coming from the front end into the gas tank it looked like a hot wheels bike to me, this was in Puerto Rico back in the day when you really dint see expensive vehicles just old chevys, toyotas and scooters...

A guy in the neighborhood had a KZ1000 with a sawed off Kerker that was baaaaaddd to the bone and made me want a bike bad. When I finally got a bike it was a Honda XL125 lol. The first Ninja 1000 I saw a guy riding at the local university got me itching and I later got a 87 Gixxer 750.

Lucky for me my Dad was a motorcycle junky when he was young .. He told me stories of standing on the seat at 90 MPH and driving by the local cops just to piss them off ..
So when it came time for me to start driving he said i'll get you a motorcycle .. My first street bike was a honda CB 100 .. The CB 100 was the first bike i hot hodded , i added a big bore kit , 125 CC carb and a hooker header .. I even hand ported the head !! ..Wasn't long till i got a new RD 350 to hot rod .. Thanks Dad !!

Here is a picture of Dad on his 45 CID Indian Scott and a picture of his 1936 61 CID over head Valve HD .. The picture was taken the day he got it from the dealer ..

My first bike was a 350 Honda I was about 15 years old the guy at the dealership said they would run 13.50s but mine would only run 16.00? I always wondered how big that Jap was that did that? My second bike was a 750 Honda which I made into a 900. Then Kawi come out with the 900 and I was slow again. I think the Honda was making about 60 hp there was a guy across the street at big D Triumph that was into road racing. He said those bikes were making 100 hp I just couldn't imagine a bike that makes that much horsepower. Well we've come a long way since then I've always been between fast bikes and fast cars. But now fast cars are too expensive so me and my son race and ride motorcycles well he races and I watch since I'm too old and too fat to beat anybody but I still get a kick out of taking out a young kid on a 1000.

My dad bought me an XR75 for my first when i was 11 - wasnt long before i beat it into the ground so in '87 he brought home a new CR125 with tags on the bars, took a while getting used to the power difference but eventually raced at our local mx track - got my ass kicked too.....so gave up on mxracing and stuck with trails and occasional track days until i got my first streetbike at 18 - '82 KZ550LTD......kerker 4-1, junked the airbox for KandN conicals, geared the piss out of it.......beat it up for a year or so before we decided to try my hand at ameteur roadracing, so i got a '97 YZF1000R and was in love from that moment on.......ended up tracking it out to the point of being "unstreetable" so when he died, it sat for a bit before i sold it to buy my ZX14........just couldnt continue with the racing idea without Dad being there.......still enjoy trackdays with the 14 though. I've had a bunch of dirtweapons since, just never took racing seriously.......but one of my favorite dirtbikes i ever had was my old YZ465.......definitely the "do anything" bike

Mine is a little different than most. I started on dirt bikes and was heavily involved in racing local events and what not. I had a KX125 for a while and then stepped up to a KX250. I actually was pretty good however I had a very bad fall that landed me in the hospital for a month. Anyways, I thought that if I purchased a streetbike for some reason it would be safer? LOL I bought my first ZX6 in 99 and then my second in 02. I only drove on the street and then one day my buddy had me bring my bike to the drag strip and ever since then it has been an addiction! I love everything about drag racing except not being the fastest! I hope everyone had a great Chirstmas

Watching Biker Boyz and Torque is what did it for me. Being able to ride a street bike through the dirt and on top of a train from car to car just amazed me, had to get a street bike after seeing that.

Got a minibike at 4 years old for christmas. Moved up the chain as I got bigger. Man the first 2 stroke??!! Dad was (is) a Harley dude... so I had the HD 250 too. Need for speed. ha ha In 79 I Got a 73 honda 360, had been bored out... I thought I was cool beating buddy onhis KZ400. Time moved on and I had a sporster and then a Wide Glide... 1980. Rode a buddies 82 Suzuki GSX 750 Katana and found I had been brainwashed!! 83 got a GS1100e. 85 I was in to money... got a GS1150 and a 600 gpz ninja. I went drag racing every weekend. Many clutches back then. So I started watching local drag racing events. Then buddies started me up on watching road racing. Since then I have always gotten 'sport bikes'. I had many bikes along the way also. v-65 magna, busas, zx10s... balckbird, zx 11, 12, 14 etc... So glad that I had that ride years ago... I would still be throwing money at Harley... my dad still wonders where he went wrong... Glad I made the switch. Now if I could just get that fast v-max... I will be done.

I'd owned a wide range of bikes, including bevel drive Ducati's, a Laverda and several types of Honda up to 1984 but I wasn't what you'd call a sports bike fan. Just in love with bikes.

Then a couple of things happened. Firstly, a colleague of mine was a Manxman and in 1980 he took me along to the Isle Of Man TT Races for the first time. Secondly, the GPz900R that won the 1984 Production TT was owned by another friend of mine and he let me ride it. This was the friend who also introduced me to sprinting and LSR.

That was it for me, I bought my own GPz900R in late summer 1984 and have only owned one bike, out of dozens, since then that falls outside the Sports or Hyperbike category.

"i fell in love with sportbikes in the late 80s when i seen my first.. "

Same here. ~1981, I started seeing fairinged bikes every now and then and I thought they were coolest looking/sounding machines on the face of the earth. I waited many years to get my first. Had some experience on large cruisers that were owned by my father. I guess it was insurance, fear and finances that kept me off a sport bike until I was 41. Then I got the 14. I can honestly say it has been exactly like I always dreamed it would be.
