Rear wheel clicking?

Seems to have started mildly last night, It first started with just being able to feel through my left peg. Now as I got to work today I could here a clicking. I tried to figure out if it was just the wheel bearing by clicking it into neutral and rolling and it seems to still click then. Then I try other things and it seems to not follow the same pattern. But it was definitely louder when I got to work an actual audible click that was not there before. I checked the rear sprocket, looks perfect. I held the areas where the bearings are at and they are not even warm, thinking that maybe the bearings are going. Bike has 13.5k on it . Any ideas?

your chain may be the culprit..........make sure it's aligned and slacks adjusted to spec.
when is the last time you lubed/adjusted it? may be overdue for replacement

Wow that sucks, my chain may already be gone? It Looks great. I had adjusted it myself a month or so ago. ITs the second time I have done so. I just started to use that teflon lube, I forget the name. ..... ITs due for a cleaning and a lube. :\

Could the front sprocket wear weird and not the rear sprocket? Cause the rear looks good? Sorry just brain storming here

You have to pull the wheel off and hand feel each bearing spinning smooth or has a notch and might have the race surface finish in a galled/hanging up a bearing, where the condition is sliding, not rolling when it come around 360° is the noise. You can also place hands at 12 and 6 0'clock. Then rock back and forth the wheel assembly ~ Pushing 12 0'clock away from you, then pull 6 0'clock toward you and then reverse the push. If there is a loose/wobble wheel with the tight axle, there is your problem.

Chain/sprocket hop/hi-spot can start a new pattern if you jump tooth for tire changes. Is the chain smooth as you roll the wheel, or can you see the lower rung jump rope in a school yard with the girls doing double-time -woo-woo-woo down the road they can hear you coming WOO-WOO-WOO here are my new tires!

Both of these I will have to test when I get home, Though I have never pulled the rear wheel. I might have to take this to the shop. Though cost wise I would rather fix myself.... The chain should not of hopped if anything it was a little tight after my adjustment.

Sprockets can wear in a weird way sometimes when out of alignment.........but if you ignored the noise and kept riding it, and saying the alignment is the reason behind the noise - you'll see wear on one side or the other of both sprockets and chain eventually...........If I were you I'd pull the rear wheel and check the rear brake rotor/pads for signs of warpage or glazing to ensure that's not the problem...........then stick a finger in each bearing and swirl 'em around looking for a "rough" spot or feeling of "grit" in the bearing, if the bearings feel smooth, grease the axle, spacers, and seals and re-assemble, clean and lube the chain and re-align, torque it all back together and test ride -- Then, if you've still got trouble I would look into replacing the chain & sprockets..........I always replaced mine at 8k-10k mile intervals just due to stretching and general wear, needs it or not doesn't matter to me..........I'd rather spend a few hundred dollars every couple years than run the risk of a high speed chain bind or break!!

Good Rule with the chain I think I will adopt that into my Motorcycle maintenance 8-10k replacement intervals

I have never pulled the rear hub apart, guess I should buy a service manual

Well now all I am worried about is getting home ok so I can check this stuff out , maybe I will get a can of lube around here and lube some things up before I head home.

On a ZX14, I'd never run anything smaller than a 530 series chain..........I swear by the D.I.D Gold Series, good wear life and good, strong tensil strength..........I also don't use anything other than Maxima chain wax in light doses almost weekly...........works well to keep the chain lubed and doesn't fling much at all after the initial first couple coats.
But, I'd be careful about putting just ANY kind of lube on your chain for now, believe as long as it's silicone based lubricant you should be fine if you're running an o-ring/x-ring chain.........if it's a simple roller chain, you can lube it with most anything for a short trip home...........just don't overdo it because it will sling all over the left side of the rear tire and could cause you to slide.........if you have some penetrating grease ( sprays on like WD40 but solidifies into a grease ) that would work fairly well for a "temporary" chain lubricant to get you to the house.
Let us know what you find out!!

YES............ sometimes when the chain is warm from a ride, raise the rear and use WD-40 and clean the chain several times. And keep moving the chain every 3 or 4 chain links moving each one and speaying again and wipe all WD-40 off. Find the the links that are a kink in them and see if you can move them with more WD-40 and keep trying to move them, plyers with a old sock so not to mark the gold plating. Maybe they will fee up. If not replace chain and new steel sprockets..... EK ZZZ Gold is the strongest "O" ring street chain I have found. I ordered extra rivet gold master links with mine. I use Maxiumn Chain Wax. Does not fling off as bad. Mike went 26,000 miles on a stock chain cleaning this way with WD-40 and chain wax for lube and adjust chain every 1000 miles. Good Luck

I know this is an old thread but in the Kawa owners manual its says use something like a continuous chain with no master link, so the chain would have to be install whole? does this sound right, I am at work so I can't reference right now if someone could look. what are they saying?

Buy a EKZZZ Gold it comes with a rivet master link that after you use a chain tool press
makes it a solid chain. You have to use a Dremel grinder and grind off the the 2 pin heads to remove the stock chain. After you use the chain link tool kit it mashes(presses) the the new rivet design master link so it is pressed on like all the links.

ZX14dreamin, all of your after market chains will have a master link. looking at your posts above, do you have the marks located evenly(on both sides) for alignment?

Yes they are matched up and I heard no clicking when it was on the stand it was only after I had put it down and it started to roll, maybe a bit to tight is all I can think but I can move the chain 3/4 to an inch. Back when I first posted this I did not observe any sticking links, I did though last time I was cleaning and lubing the chain, so I am just going to get a new chain.....

At slow speed if your lugging the bike around the chain is noisy and slaps around a little even its adjusted correctly. My bike has always done that and I consider it normal. No noise when I am up to speed. I almost have 11K on the stocker.

Wow what a difference, got a new chain last night and things are silky smooth , the clicking is gone and little did I know a vibration caused from the worn out chain is gone. I did not even realize it was there till it was gone. Glad it was just the chain....
